David Iten Obituary

David M. Iten, 85, of Momence, passed away peacefully, in his home, May 22, 2024, under Hospice care.

David was born in South Dakota, on May 11, 1939, the son of Melvin and Bertha Iten.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Diane; his daughter, Stephanie, and son-in-law, Patrick, of Austin, Texas; his daughter, Jennifer, of Chicago; four grandsons, Alexander, Joseph and Jack, of Austin, Texas, and David, of Denver, Colo.; great-granddaughter, Camile, of Austin, Texas; his brothers, Charles, of Bismarck, N.D., twin brother, Donald, of Stockton, Calif.; and John, of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Shirley Stone, formerly of Coalinga, Calif.; and his grandson, Michael, formerly of Austin, Texas.

Following trade school, Dave went to Momence as a newspaper printer to work for The Momence Progress Reporter. He worked in the newspaper business until he retired from The Post-Tribune, Gary, Ind., in 1998. He owned and operated Dave's Tree Service until 2009 where he was known to many around town as the one to call for any tree trimming and firewood (and basically any odd job!) needs.

Dave was an avid hunter and fisherman, taking annual trips to Manitoba, Canada, with his friends to moose hunt. Dave lived on the Kankakee River for 39 years and spent many happy days boating and socializing.

He was a lifetime member of the Momence Anchor Club and was fondly dubbed "Mayor of Reject Island" (a much-loved sandbar on the river) for his dedication to keeping it safe and clean.

A celebration of life visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Momence Anchor Club in Momence.

Cremation rites have been accorded.
