Ronald Shankland Obituary

Ronald Shankland Sr. of Manteno, IL gently passed away on Sunday, 28 April 2024, at his son's home in the presence of loved ones.

Ron Sr. was a loving father, father-in-law, grandfather (Bopah), great grandfather, and dear friend to so many in his community.

Born in Newton, IA, on January 19, 1936, during a terrible blizzard, Ron was one of four children born to Vern and Gyneth (Wisely) Shankland. His parents and sisters, Jacqulyn Williams and Jo Dee Caliendo, preceded him in death. Sadly, Ron was also preceded in death by his middle son, Ralph Shankland.

Surviving are his sons Ron Jr. (Michelle) Shankland in Bellevue, NE, and John (Amy) Shankland in Noblesville, IN. He leaves seven granddaughters; Tyffini (Chad) Dalton in Lincoln, NE; Ashley (Josh) George and Amanda Shankland Harper in Parsons, KS; Jessica (Chris) Mioton in Nashville, TN; Joyce (Daniel) Golden in Fort Scott, KS; Maggie Shankland in Kankakee, IL. and Lina Nakayama of Naha Okinawa Japan; He leaves two grandsons: Jonathon Shankland and Jacob Shankland, both of Noblesville, IN. Ron has 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Ron is also survived by his younger brother, John Shankland, of Paw Paw, IL.

Ron graduated from Batavia High School, class of 1953, in Batavia, IL. He was especially proud of his time of honorable service in the United States Marine Corps from 18 Feb 1954 until 17 Feb 1957 as a Field Artillery Fire Control Marine in the 3rd Armored Amphibian Company, 3rd Amtrac Battalion, 1st Marine Division (Reinforcement), Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. Ron was deployed to Korea as the Korean War ended and spent his time there on post where the Imjin River joins the Han River downstream of Seoul, South Korea. Semper Fi, Marine!

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 22nd at the Chatterbox Cafe in Bradley, IL, from 3-5 pm.
