Jack Cohen Obituary

Jack Cohen of Crete, IL passed away peacefully in his own home on July 15th, 2023. He was 79. Jack was born in Lafayette, Indiana to parents Leo and Eldora Cohen. He graduated from Monitor grade/middle school and from East Tripp High School in 1962. He attended Purdue University and then served in the U.S. Army, spending time both domestically and overseas. He began his professional career with U.S. Steel followed by several other companies, primarily within the steel industry, retiring in 2005.

He was generally a man of few words. He enjoyed boating, snow skiing, his motorcycle, and he always enjoyed cars – racing fan to the end – and was a voracious reader. He had trouble finding books of his genre in the library that he hadn't already read. He cared a great deal about his family and friends.

In 1974 he joined Louis Myers Cohen in marriage for over 48 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Eldora and two siblings – Mike Cohen and Lisa Weaver. He is survived by his wife Lois, brother Steve (Kathy), brother Greg (Pam) and sister Cheryl Cotton.

A wake/viewing service will be held 4-7 pm on Thursday, July 20 at the Crete Funeral Home, 1182 Main Street, Crete, Illinois 60417. A Memorial Service will be planned in his hometown of Lafayette at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Jack requested donations be made to the South Suburban Humane Society (animal shelter) at 21800 Central Avenue, Matteson, IL 60443
