David Bosomworth Obituary


Retired U.S.C.G. Captain

David Palliser Bosomworth, 79 of 301 Breezewood Drive, Elizabeth City, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Palliser and Vera Thompson Bosomworth. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis N. Bosomworth; two children, Molly Hamilton and her husband, William, and Will Nixon and his wife, Erin; a brother, Dr. Peter Bosomworth PPB, MD Chancellor Emeritus University of Kentucky Medical Center and his wife, Jody; and grandchildren, Anne, Evva, and Hythe Hamilton. He was born June 11, 1931 in Akron, Ohio. Dave graduated from John R. Buchel High School and received a B.S. and B.A. from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio and a MBA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich. In 1954 he entered the Coast Guard OCS and was commissioned as Ensign, USCGR and entered Naval Flight Training. After designation as a Coast Guard Aviator he was stationed at Coast Guard Air Stations in San Francisco, Hawaii and Elizabeth City. He served as Flag Pilot at Coast Guard Headquarters, Executive Officer at CGAS Corpus Christi, Texas and Commanding Officer at CGAS Savannah, Ga. After attending the Air War College at Maxwell AFB, Ala., he served as Commander of Elizabeth City CGAS and retired in 1976 having served the Coast Guard for twenty-four years. After retiring he entered the real estate business in Elizabeth City and continued working and helping his wife grow the business. He was owner of Hall and Nixon Real Estate having graduated from the NC Real Estate Institute. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, member of the Elizabeth City Rotary Club for thirty-three years, Board of Directors of the United Way, President of Albemarle Hospital Board of Directors, City Councilman for Elizabeth City for four years, local and regional Red Cross Board of Directors, Pi Sigma Alpha (National Political Science Honor Society), and the North Carolina 12-gauge state champion in skeet shooting in 1978 and 1979. Dave's quiet but indomitable presence and his innate wisdom and will be missed and remembered by those who love him. A memorial service will be Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010 at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Frese officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence and immediately after the service in the Asbury Room of the church.
