Eric Barnes Obituary
ELIZABETH CITY - Eric Barnes, Jr., age 76, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away at Hertford Rehab and Healthcare Center on Sunday, May 4, 2025. Born in Greene County, NC on January 16, 1949, to the late Eric Barnes and Bettie Heath Barnes, he was the husband of Carolyn Jones Barnes.
Eric honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, proudly stationed aboard the USS Strong. Following his time in the military, he served as a Deputy Sheriff on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for twenty-eight years. An avid hunter, Eric was often joined by his beloved dog, Captain. He had a deep love for all animals. In his leisure time, he enjoyed shooting skeet and clay pigeons. Above all, Eric valued his friendships and made a point to stay connected with those he cared about.
In addition to his wife of over 26 years, he is survived by his son, Glenn Barnes of Elizabeth City, NC; nieces, Betty "Jo Anne" Jennings and Rachel Elaine Williams, both of Virginia Beach, VA; and many loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Bertha A. Williams and Jeanette Barnes Clifton.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Twiford Memorial Chapel.
