Herbert Hawkins Obituary

Lt. Col. Herbert H. Hawkins, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.) joined his comrades on heaven's shores on Dec. 17, 2005. Death was from natural causes at age 95. Dr. Hawkins was born in Hackensack, N.J., son of the late Herbert and Rose Hawkins. He was a decorated combat veteran of World War II and Korea, retiring in 1962. He earned his masterÕs degree at East Carolina University and doctorate from the George Washington University. He was a professor at the University of South Florida for 20 years, retiring from that position in 1982. Dr. Hawkins was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Helen E. Bofferding of Edenton, N.C.; his son, Herbert Jr. and wife, Wendy, of Duck, N.C.; and his daughter, Helen Cathcart and husband, Ken, also of Edenton, N.C. Dr. Hawkins has nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Evans Funerals and Cremations, 516 Virginia Road, Edenton. U.S. marine Corps memorial services will be held at Quantico National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
