Nicholas Steven Overman, Sr. Elizabeth City - Taco... Trash Can... Tricky Nicky... Pops... Daddy...so many names for one man, but the last one was his most cherished. Nicholas Steven Overman, Sr. was born on February 22, 1960, in Virginia, to Dean and Mary Overman and it was the start of a wonderful journey through a life that spanned 65 years with more than half of those great years as a beloved husband, father, and successful business owner.
Nicky was raised in Weeksville, North Carolina, the youngest of two brothers. Nicky graduated from Northeastern High School and quickly went into the workforce. He had grit, determination, and a work ethic that destined him to become successful in this thing called life. He worked in building supply for a few years, but soon discovered his calling in the construction trade. He began picking up work for his future father-in-law and from there the foundation for the rest would be laid.
It was while he was working for "Big Mike" that he met and married his wife Michaelle in 1990. He picked her up in his work truck with bondo on his doors and rode off to start building a beautiful life together. Nicky built their first home in Small Acres where he and Michaelle started their family. As his family grew, so did his business. He took immense pride in his work and in creating beautiful exteriors for thousands of homes within his community. He worked many long hours, weekends and overtime to become a successful businessman. No matter how successful he became, he always helped out anyone who needed a hand. He often gave and did for others, not wanting acknowledgement. Along with being a business owner, Nicky loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and duck hunter. Nicky has a wall full of pictures of each hunt with friends and family over the years.
Although Nicky accomplished much personally and professionally, the greatest source of pride came through his wife and children. Michaelle, Steven, Beth and Logan were...his everything. No matter where you might run into him, the conversation always circled back to and around them. He loved the people they were and all they accomplished. Whether it be through sports, school, work or life, they were his best parts. Steven an engineer, Beth a general contractor and Logan, the youngest who has taken over the business during the last year and done amazing things. His absolute love for them shone through every fiber of his being. The happiest moments for him were when he went hunting or fishing with them, watching them play ball or ride their horses, spending the day on the river with them or sitting in Carter-Finley cheering on the Wolfpack. He took great joy in sharing his love of hunting and
fishing with his kids and was thrilled that his son-in-law Blake shared his passion for it. He especially loved that all their friends considered his home theirs and came to visit. There are hundreds of people who have learned how to clean, cook and eat crabs in his backyard. So many great stories, so many memories of the man who loved his family more than anyone....there are just not enough words to express how big he lived and loved.
Nicky leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Michaelle Herring Overman, his oldest son Nicholas "Steven" Overman, Jr. and his girlfriend Camille, his daughter Beth Stephenson and her husband Blake, youngest son Logan Overman and his girlfriend Savannah, his brother Andy and wife Cindy, nephews Brandon and Cameron Overman, sister-in-law Shelly Herring and mother-in-law JoAnn Herring, as well as special friends, David and Sharon Bailey and his guys that work and have worked with him for years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dean and Mary Overman, his father and mother-in-law Mike and Susan Herring, and his brother-in-law Jon Herring.
