Elizabeth City resident

Richard Raymond Hoefs, 79, of the 300 block of W. Fearing Street, was called quietly home by his Lord Nov. 17, 2008 at his home. Richard was born in Cleveland, Ohio to the late August and Minnie Stiles Hoefs. He was a graduate of West Tech High School in Cleveland. Richard was a member of the track team at West Tech and kept in touch with several of his teammates throughout his adult life. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Besides his parents his is also preceded in death by two brothers. Richard leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 18 years, Augusta Crum (Phillips) Hoefs of the residence; two sons, Richard A. and wife, Carol, of Atlanta, Ga., and Greg and wife, Jennie; daughter, Debbie; his loving stepchildren, Donnie R. Phillips and Tiffany Riggs, Ramona L. Phillips of Elizabeth City, N.C., Gwen S. Hartzog and husband, Jeffery, of Williamsburg, Va, and Alethia L. Balance and husband, Wayne, of Camden, N.C.; five grandsons; one granddaughter, and six great-grandchildren. Richard loved and enjoyed living to the full extent, he was very proud of being a 32 degree Mason of fifty years, of serving as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, and of his 18 years on the Cleveland Fire Department. He and Augusta liked traveling, biking, boating, antiquing, cooking together, and teaching stained glass at COA, where Augusta remained after Richard became too ill to continue. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 at Twiford's Memorial Chapel at 11 a.m. with Rev. Grace Wood officiating The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at other times at the residence of Mrs. Augusta Hoefs, 318 W. Fearing Street, Elizabeth City. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 27985, Raleigh, NC 27611, or to Albemarle Hospice, P.O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0189. Twiford's Funeral Homes, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is assisting the Beyer family.
