William Albert Bess, 67, of 4092 Caratoke Highway, Barco, N.C., died Monday, March 2, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Currituck County, N.C. to the late Lucian and Nellie Sanderlin Bess and was the husband of Glenda Gillikin Bess. Mr. Bess retired as a Lieutenant with the Currituck County Sheriff Department as a Jailor. He was a member of the Perkins Methodist Church, Currituck Ruritan Club, and was an avid racecar fan and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Besides his wife, Mr. Bess is survived by his daughter, Lisa B. Madre and husband, Gene, of Hertford, N.C.; a brother, Ray Bess of Moyock, N.C.; and two grandchildren, William Seth Madre and Collin Madre. Mr. Bess was loved dearly and will be greatly missed. A funeral service will be held at Twiford's Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Greg Clark and Rev. Charles Wellons. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home lobby following the service and other times at the residence.
