GREENVILLE — Janet Lois Coate Boyer, 79, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016 at 4:09 p.m. at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. She was born March 5, 1937, in Mercer County, Ohio, the daughter of the late John C. and Ruth N. (Fox) Coate.
As a youth, she was a participant in 415 winning awards in clothing designs, meal preparation and organizational skills. In her high school senior year, she emceed the national 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. Finishing first in her high school graduating class in Celina in 1956.
She attended Ohio State University where she completed four-year graduation requirements in home economics in two and two thirds years. During her years at Ohio State, she earned academic honors each year. She graduated cum laude in March 1959. Summers she worked in the management offices for ODOT.
She and Don married March 26, 1959, and left immediately for Charleston South Carolina, where Don reported for duty as a U.S. Mine Sweeper. During their three and a half years stay in Charleston she taught grade school.
When Don's service ended after being a part of the Cuban Crisis they moved to Flint, Michigan, in the summer of 1962 where she substitute taught high school classes in and around the Flint Area. She had served over three months at the Flint Catholic High School teaching Russian Language.
They relocated 15 miles west of Flint where she became a full-time home economics and vocational teacher and developed a peer counselling program for up to 40 students at a time.
Upon retirement with Don in 1999, they relocated to Greenville following their three children already in the area.
During her 16 years in Greenville, she served as chairman of the Friends of the Library, president of the Greenville Art Guild, secretary for the Senior Scriber. She was secretary of the League of Women Voters.
Serving her church, she led the Stephen Ministry program, sang in the church choir, guided the Tuesday Gals monthly meetings, gave children sermons during the church service, was a part of the encouragers Bible Study, led nine years of Thanksgiving dinners for the community, and was a member of the Church Guidance and Growth Program, She also led the OSU Community Blood Drive and OSU Scholarship Program.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her brother: Roger Coate; and her daughter-in-law: Lucinda J. Boyer.
She is survived by her husband: Donald C. Boyer of Greenville; children and spouses: Scott C. and Katrina Boyer of Troy, Dr. Beth and John Vehre of Greenville, and Paul Boyer of Greenville; grandchildren: James C. Boyer of Troy, Daniel S. Boyer of Troy, Alexander J. Vehre of Greenville and Ashley Smith of Greenville; great-grandchildren; sister: Wilma Gehron of Greenville; nephew: Roger Coate Jr.; great-nephew: Jacob Coate; numerous cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 114 E. Fourth St., Greenville, Ohio, with Rev. Dr. John Person officiating. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Nov. 28 at the church. Arrangements are being handled by Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio. Mrs.Boyer was a amazing lady. She taught me so much about cooking with what you have . I am the woman I am today because of her guidance. I enjoyed going grocery shopping before school with her. She was a fantastic teacher.

Don, Beth, and all of Jan's family,
I just learned of Jan's passing and am so saddened but yet know that she is in a wonderful place with God since she had such a heart for Him. She was faith in action.
