Larry Amspaugh

UNION CITY, IN -- Larry Allen Amspaugh, 71, of Union City, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 1, 2025.

Born on April 15, 1954, in Darke County, Ohio, Larry was the son of the late Jack and Patricia (Whittington) Amspaugh.

He grew up in Ansonia, Ohio, where he attended Ansonia High School (class of 1972) and was a proud multi-sport athlete, competing in baseball and basketball. He lived in Ansonia until 1986, when he moved his family and made Union City their home.

Larry had many jobs throughout his life but most notably worked at Union City Body Company, Magee Brothers Construction, and later built a career as the owner and operator of his own business, Hometown Handyman. His strong work ethic and willingness to lend a hand were matched only by his deep commitment to his community.

A man of service, Larry was an active member of the Lions Club, Jaycees, and Knights of Columbus. His greatest community legacy began in 2006 when he envisioned and launched A Community Christmas at Harter Park in Union City, Indiana. What started with fewer than 100 donated strands of lights has grown into a beloved tradition featuring more than 4.5 million lights spread across 68 acres, drawing over 6,000 cars each year. Larry deeply appreciated the time, dedication, and effort of the countless volunteers across the community who helped bring his vision to life and have made the event such a lasting success. His vision also led to lasting additions in Harter Park and downtown Union City, including the construction of a covered bridge, a storage barn to support the growing display, and an outdoor amphitheater that continues to host community events. This year marks the display's 20th anniversary, a testament to Larry's dedication and love for bringing joy to others.

Outside of work and service, Larry enjoyed a variety of hobbies that reflected his love of sports, the outdoors, and family. He was an avid golfer and bowler, loved fishing, and rarely missed a chance to watch his grandchildren compete in their sporting events. He was a loyal fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Indiana University basketball, cheering them on every season.

Larry cherished his family above all. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Anita (Barga) Amspaugh; his sons, Kyle Amspaugh (Ashlee) with grandchildren Adelyn, Eli, and Anna, and A. J. Amspaugh with grandchildren Ellen and Andy; and his sister, Susan (Amspaugh) Boerger (Ted). He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, David Amspaugh.

A Memorial Mass will be held in Larry's honor on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Union City, Indiana. Fellowship and a time of sharing memories will follow in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Union City Lions Club or AseraCare Hospice Care in Larry's memory.

Larry will be remembered for his warm smile, tireless devotion to family and community, and the countless ways he brightened the lives of others.
