William Kuhn

GREENVILLE -- William E. Kuhn, known to everyone as Bill, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025, at the age of 77, after living courageously with Parkinson's disease for 17 years. Though his illness slowed his body, it never dimmed his quick wit, sharp mind, or sense of humor.

Born in Greenville, Ohio, on June 28, 1948, Bill was the son of Perry E. and Betty Paff Kuhn. He grew up surrounded by love and laughter alongside his four sisters: Leora Kuhn Minnich (Emerson), Marlyn Kuhn Shellabarger (Don), Janet Kuhn Dunwoody (Jim), and Eva Kuhn Custer (Sonnie). He was a 1966 graduate of Arcanum High School in Ohio.

Bill graduated from Taylor University, where he met and married Carol Norder. Together they raised four children-Nathan Kuhn (Susan), David Kuhn (Amber), Stephan Kuhn, and Elizabeth Kuhn Masterson (Dustin)-and shared many wonderful years as a family.

After earning his degree in physics, Bill began his career with the Indiana State Police. He served for 28 years, starting on the road before transferring to the laboratory division, where he rose to the rank of Captain. A respected leader and expert in forensics, he testified in nearly every county in Indiana before retiring in 2001.

In 1995, Bill married the love of his life, Joyce Visintine Johnstone, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span three decades. The two shared countless adventures, laughter, and unwavering devotion to one another. Earlier this year, Bill and Joyce joyfully celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary, a milestone filled with treasured memories and deep gratitude for the life they built together.

After his retirement, Bill joined Joyce at the University of Notre Dame, working as an investigator with the campus police department. He later served with the U.S. Marshals Service as a federal court security officer until his Parkinson's diagnosis in 2009. Following his retirement from law enforcement, Bill and Joyce returned to Indianapolis to be near their children and grandchildren, who brought him endless joy.

Bill was a man of many interests-an avid chess player, a fluent German speaker, and a loyal friend to many. He was known for his intelligence, humor, and genuine kindness.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce; three of his four sisters, Leora, Janet, and Eva; his children Nathan, David, Stephan, and Elizabeth; stepchildren Anne Johnstone and Robert Johnstone; and his grandchildren Anna Kuhn, Colin Beaver, Ryan Kuhn, William Masterson, Claire Masterson, Olivia Masterson, Delaney Johnstone, Sidney Johnstone, Xochilt Diaz, and Saga Blakley.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who has offered love and support during this time. In honor of Bill's life and service, memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana State Police Alliance.

Bill will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, his sharp sense of humor, and his deep love for family and friends. He lived a life of service, curiosity, and compassion-and leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
