Andrew Lawrence Dugas

Andrew Dugas Obituary

Dugas, Andrew (Andy) Lawrence
Born in Wilmington, California, November 10, 1934, went to be with the Lord April 11, 2006, peacefully in his sleep. Andy was a great man of God. His quiet witness was manifest in numerous lives and in the countless selfless things he did for people. He lived his whole life in the South Bay, graduating from Banning High School, LA Harbor College and CSULB. He taught in South Central LA at Horace Mann Jr. High and transferred to Narbonne High School. He was a talented shop teacher teaching metal, drafting and stage craft, and his teaching skills went beyond the class material. He imparted life skills to students abandoned by the system, changing lives in the process. He retired in 1991, but returned to teach at White Middle School until 2002. Today he is resting peacefully with the Lord but our hearts are heavy with loss. He is survived by his wife, Judy; daughters, Kimberly Axtell (Todd) and Deborah Briand (Tony); son, Andy the younger (Lisa), Sherman Winner (Phebes); and grandchildren, Maricel, Dylan, Lauren, Jason, and Meaghan, and the countless others who called him friend. Memorial service will be held at Rolling Hills Covenant Church North Campus on April 21, 2006 at 1:00 PM. A celebration of Andy's Life will be held at his home following the service. All who were touched by Andy's spirit are welcome to come and share your story. Please sign the guest book at: www.dailybreeze.com/obits. I grew up a couple blocks away from the Dugas family, went to church with Judy's mom and had Mr. Dugas as a substitute teacher at Narbonne. My three brothers and sister also had Mr. Dugas as a teacher. He was a wonderful man who will be missed. You all have my deepest sympathy and you will be in my prayers. God Bless.

My brother Cliff was a fraternity brother of Andy's at L.A. Harbor College and Cliff use to bring me along to some of the functions. Even at this time in his life Andy was always the nicest to me and my favorite in my brothers fraternity. Judy, his wife was a classmate of mine at Narbonne and my condolences to Judy and the entire Dugas family.

My parents (Bob & Judy) & I used to live on the cul-de-sac with the Dugas family. It was great neighborhood where the families actually knew each other and watched out for each other. Mr. Dugas was well known in the neighborhood for his friendly smiles and welcoming wave whenever someone would drive by his house. My children even remember Mr. Dugas as the friendly man who always said 'Hello' and never yelled at them for being noisy kids playing on the street. I'm glad we don't live there anymore...I just can't imagine the neighborhood without him. He will always be in our hearts. Our prayers and sincerest condolences go out to all the Dugas family.

I went to Banning High School with Andy, he was always kind and sometimes in trouble. When he bacame a teacher he changed the lives of many kids, including my son. Thanks to andy for teaching a boy who hated school but with Andys guidance he became a master machinist. Andy will be dearly missed

Words cant explane how I feel about Andy Dugas. He was a great shop teacher but, at the same time he taught life skills.

He welcomed me in to his family for countless camping trips to Az. and fishing trips in the eastern sierra's.

Andy always gave to his students selflessly.

I will never forget Mr. Dugas. He was my metalshop and stage crew teacher for the 3 years I was at Narbonne. Not many shop teachers back then would take a chance on having a girl in his class, and I remember my junior high school stage teacher sending a letter of recommendation to Mr. Dugas. I can honestly say that my experiences in both of his classes for those 3 years have, and will always, stand out in my memories. Even when I went through tough times during those years (being the obnoxious teenager that I was), Mr. Dugas came to me to make sure that I was ok. I send my deepest sympathy to the Dugas family in this time of sadness.

I will never forget him.

Andy was a great friend to me. I'll never forget our production of You're A Good Man Charlie Brown. It was my first attempt at a Musical Production and Andy's support and guidance were invaluable. May God Bless him always.
