Bernard Mattera Obituary

It is with heavy hearts to announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Father. Bernard J. Mattera, born and raised in San Pedro, California, on July 17, 1933, passed away on July 3, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, just 14 days short of his 90th birthday. Benny was a retired Commercial Fisherman of 55 years. He was a proud owner of several fishing boats, including bait and tuna boats. He was most proud of FV Pioneer, which he captained and engineered alongside his son John. Dad enjoyed his family immensely, especially his great-grandchildren. Benny was a prayerful man and would pray up to 15 complete Rosaries a day for his family and whoever had a request and need. Our hope is that his infectious sense of humor will be a shining light for all of us. Bernard is survived by his son, Anthony (Maryann) Mattera, Daughter Debbie (Marco) Vuoso, Donna (Michael) Vanden Dries, and Daughter-in-Law, Tina Mattera, grandchildren Shontae and Ryan Mattera, Marc (Natalie) Vuoso, Eric (Gisella) Vuoso, Nicholas (Katherine) Vanden Dries, Christian Vanden Dries, Christine Matter, and John (Taylor) Mattera, and great-grandchildren Marco, Mollie, Thomas, Henry, Jack, Jenna, Nicolette, and Julianna. Brother Michael (Jennie) Mattera, Louise Waterman, Phyllis Herring, half Brother David Perez, Step-sister Sharon Gregorio, Step Brother John Nelson, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and Friends. Bernard was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley (Buratovich) Mattera, His Granddaughter Marisa Vuoso, His son John Mattera and Great-grandson Edward Velasquez. Happily, Dad remarried in 2005 to Millie Marrick until her passing in 2015. Benny gained four stepson's Paul (Stephanie), Steve, Matt (Jen), and Nick (June) Marrick, and nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mass will be held at 10am on Friday, July 14 at Holy Trinity Church, 1292 W. Santa Cruz Street, San Pedro at 10:00 am with burial to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park, 24501 S. Western Ave, Rancho Palos Verdes. Please sign the guestbook at daily breeze.com/obits.

Dear Debbie, Marco, and family, our deepest condolences on the passing of your father. When Victor had a party at his house in 2015 I met Mr. Mattera for the first time. After speaking with him for about half an hour, I felt I knew him for20 years. He was so friendly and personable. I know all of your family will deeply miss him. Now he is in heaven with all his family and friends who believed in Jesus. God bless you, Venko, Bobby, and family.

Dear cousins Tony Boy, Debbie, Donna and families. What a blessing to have your dad in all of our lives for so very long. He was such a generous man in so many ways. There is no way to sum up how we feel about him. Our memories are full of much love and laughter, enough to last us through our lifetime. Every Uncle Benny story will keep you laughing so hard and sometimes causing us to pee our pants! I can honestly say "never a dull moment " when he was around. He will be missed especially by my dad, his bestie!

Love cousin Kathy
