Carmelina Tampus Obituary

Tampus, Carmelina Cabag
Beloved wife of Bernardo Tampus and loving mother of Kareen Tampus Punsalan, passed away on March 30, 2006 at the age of 62. She died peacefully with her family at her bedside. She is survived by her husband, Bernardo; daughter, Kareen; son-in-law, Jaime Punsalan; grandsons, Ricardo and James; mother, Susana Cabag; brother, Vimanuel Cabag; sister-in-law, Leoniza Cabag; and nieces, Erica, Catherine, Valerie and Crystal Cabag.Carmelina was born in Moalboal, Cebu, Philippines on April 20, 1943. As the daughter of Susana and Simeon (deceased) Cabag, a school principal and teacher, education was always a priority to Carmelina. She received numerous awards and accolades throughout her academic years and shared her love for education by supporting the academic goals of thousands of students. In 1993, Carmelina and her husband began a scholarship fund for elementary and secondary school students from her home town of Moalboal, Cebu. At that time, the retention of students in the district was less than 50%, primarily due to financial constraints. Since she began providing scholarships to all elementary and high school graduates, the scores of the district are now one of the highest in the region. Carmelina has helped over 1,300 students to complete high school and go on to higher education. Her legacy of education lives on through the Carmelina Cabag Tampus Moalboal, Cebu Scholarship Fund, which the family has established in her memory.Carmelina received her medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines when she was only 21 years old and practiced medicine for 41 years. In 1972, she and her husband came to the United States. They moved to Harper Woods, Michigan where she received her training in Pathology at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit. In 1977, the family moved to Torrance, CA where she served her fellowship at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. Then in 1979, they moved to Riverside, CA. Carmelina served as the Co-Chairman of the Department of Pathology of the Riverside County Regional Medical Center and was the longest standing Pathologist with the County, working there for 27 years. She and her husband began Tampus International, an internet business franchising company in 1999, and have served as mentors and friends to hundreds of people, helping them to build their businesses and dreams. Carmelina was an active member and past board member with the University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni Association of Southern California and the Philippine Medical Society of Southern California.Carmelina touched thousands of lives with her optimism, faith, humor and love. The legacy she has left behind lies in the hearts and memories of her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Carmelina Cabag Tampus Moalboal, Cebu Scholarship Fund.Viewing and Memorial Mass on Wednesday, April 5th at 7pm at Queen of Angels Church in Riverside. Dear Carmelina,

You might not know me personally, but I used to work with your husband Bernie at Notifier Company in Torrance with Jack Weaver, Janet, Loreta, Hermie and Ponyang, year 1977, until you left for Riverside.

I met Bernie again when you attended the 5:30 PM mass at Holy Trinity in San Pedro last summer. May you rest in Peace.

To the Family, please accept our sincere sympathy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Our dearest Mellie is our best friend along with her husband, Bernardito. She brought sunshine when she walked into the room with her beautiful smile, and she was a GREAT hugger. She thought of others first, and edified them to encourage positive growth within themselves. She had the gift of "gab" and was eloquent in her words. We shall cherish all the fun, crazy, silly, sweet memories we had together. We love her dearly & will miss her terribly, but we suppose God needed her Sunshine more. Her spirit will remain in our hearts always.
