Coach Bud
May 26, 1927 - January 8, 2010
Bud Fagan, born in Salem and raised in McMinnville, was a third generation Oregonian. His great-great grandparents were pioneer emigrants in 1849. At the age of 17, during WWII, Bud heard the call of duty and left home and school to enlist in the Navy and join in the war effort overseas. After the war was over, Bud returned to school and went on to Linfield College in McMinnville, OR and Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA. Bud leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years, Muriel "Lee" of Torrance; and five of their six children, Jill Johnson (Larry) of Claremont, Tim Fagan (Diana) of Walnut, Robyn Outram (Paul) of Rancho Cucamonga, Kit Turman (Chuck) of Torrance, Helen Bryant (Bobby) of Kaufman, TX; and grandchildren, Sarah Johnson Tersey, Keith and Kara Johnson, Kirk and Andrea Fagan, Tiana and Zakk Outram, Jeffery, Michelle, Russell, Emily and Savannah Turman, Shaun and Laura Grunden; and 3 great-grandchildren; along with a sister, Arlene Riley; two brothers, Jerry and Don Fagan, all of Oregon. He was preceded in death by son, George; and granddaughter, Nicole. In 1959, Bud and Lee came to California and in 1973, settled in Torrance. Bud was an avid runner, running over 20 marathons and countless other races during the 70s and 80s. After retiring from Continental Airlines in 1981, Bud began to volunteer his time, coaching Cross County and Track at Narbonne High School and continued up until a few years ago. Bud earned an AALA Community Service Award for his many years of service to the school. Bud spent many summers helping to organize and participating in a walk from Santa Barbara to Tijuana, MX to benefit the Los Ninos Orphanage. He taught Confirmation preparation classes at St. Philomena Church and coached baseball at Manhattan Beach Little League. Bud enjoyed participating in and watching sports, especially football, golf and running. He liked to read, play chess and do crossword puzzles. He was drawn to the ocean and respected all nature. He enjoyed travelling and new adventures, but his favorite place was the Oregon coast. Bud cherished and was cherished by his family and he held a special fondness for his grandchildren. Bud Fagan was a quiet man who chose to live every day as a prayer. Bud entered Eternal Life January 8th, 2010. SOOO many memories ....my favorite by far is when coach Bud wanted to scare ( i mean meet) a boy I kind of liked (now my husband) Oscar....sooo awesome ! Oscar was fresh out of bootcamp and was coming to see me , obviously Coach Bud knew everything about him (he kept all my secrets) and started asking him various questions ... for example "weren't you in Great Lakes, Illinois about a week ago" "Didn't you just graduate Bootcamp" etc etc. then proceeded by telling Oscar that he was just checking him out because he was My grandpa ... Oscar was soo puzzled trying to figure out how HE was my grandpa , then coach signaled for me to come out of where I was hiding and then coach gave me the thumbs up !!

Coach Bud was such a very very very important person in my life , I'm an orphan and I grew up kind of lonely because of it, when I joined Cross country Coach Bud showed me sooo much love, I wasn't really used to it, but soon I began to love the attention. I can honestly say he saved my life and for that I am thankful. I'm so beyond happy and blessed to have had such an AMAZING man in my life. I know coach will NOT be forgotten ,he lives on in all the kids he rescued , even if it was just to say hello he always said it with LOVE!!! I LOVE YOU COACH BUD AND YOU WILL FOREVER BE IN MY HEART .
