George O'Connor Obituary

Colonel George Francis O'Connor passed away October 24, 2009, at his home in Hawthorne, CA, from complications of esophageal cancer. George was born November 13, 1922, in Cambridge, MA. George joined the United States Army in 1940 and was honorably discharged as a second lieutenant in 1946. He received a bachelor's degree from University of Southern California in Los Angeles. George worked most of his civilian career at the Defense Logistics Agency, retiring in 1991. He also enjoyed a long career in the army reserves, retiring as a colonel. He and his first wife, Rosemary, had two children. He shared his retirement with his second wife, Karen. He is survived by his children, Terrence P. O'Connor and Maureen McFarland; by his grandchildren, Kyle O'Connor, Devin O'Connor, Christopher Woodward, Vincent Belding, and Catherine Izzo; and by nine great-grandchildren. In retirement he enjoyed traveling, volunteering for the El Segundo Police Department, and studying military history. He will be greatly missed. Services will be held at Rice Mortuary in Torrance, CA on Monday, November 2nd at 2:00 p.m. followed by a reception in Rice's Lighthouse Reception Room. Burial with military honors will be held Tuesday, November 3rd at 11:30 a.m. at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
