Janet Brennan Obituary

Janet Carroll Brennan October 4, 1925 - September 15, 2018 Our beloved Mother, Janet Carroll Brennan, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at her home of 62 years in Rancho Palos Verdes. She was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on October 4, 1925 to Frank and Florence (nee Schulze) Carroll and had three siblings, brothers John and Charles Carroll and sister Lois Carroll Beh. Janet was raised in Des Moines where she attended St. Augustine School and St. Joseph Academy. She earned her BA in English Literature from Drake University where she was a proud member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In 1950, she was hired as a stewardess by United Airlines and moved west to San Francisco. She met a handsome fellow Midwesterner, James (Jim) Brennan in 1955 and after a whirlwind courtship, they were married on July 30,1955 at St. Vincent de Paul Church in San Francisco. Their reception was at the Naval Officer's Club on Treasure Island. After honeymooning down the California coast, they settled in Los Angeles. Janet and Jim moved to Palos Verdes in October 1956 with their first daughter to a brand new home in Grandview and raised their four daughters on the Peninsula where they attended St. John Fisher School and Rolling Hills High School. With the girls all in school, Janet returned to work in the airline industry as a reservation agent for Western Airlines (later Delta Airlines) from 1966 until her retirement in 1989. Through her job, the family was able to travel the world together and enjoyed countless memorable vacations and adventures. In retirement she enjoyed volunteering at the Assistance League shop, meeting for lunch with her fellow "Western/ Delta Ladies", and participating in activities with the South Bay Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association. Her Catholic faith was the bedrock of her life and she could be found each morning at St. John Fisher Church attending daily Mass with her special friends. She and Jim were founding members of the parish where she was active in the Women's Guild and served as a Eucharistic minister to the sick. Her personal motto was "Faith and Family, Family and Faith" and she was a shining example and inspiration to family and others as she lived this creed. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, brothers John and Charles and cherished husband of 56 years, Jim (2012). Janet is survived by daughters Kathleen Brennan Barndt (Jeffrey), Barbara Brennan Holmes (Philip), Susan Brennan and Nancy Brennan, grandchildren Paul Barndt, James Barndt, Elizabeth Holmes and William Holmes, all of whom will miss her dearly. A Funeral Mass to celebrate Janet's life will be held on Friday, October 12 at 1:00 PM at St. John Fisher Church, 5488 Crest Road, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.
