Mary Halkett
Mary L. Halkett passed away peacefully on September 6, 2021, in her home of nearly 50 years in Palos Verdes, California. She died at home with her children Kent, Jim and Kate by her side. Born to Rudolph (Rudy) and Lolita Hickey in Sacramento, Mary was an only child blessed with the love and attention of her extended family. She attended St. Joseph's Academy where she made lifelong friends, played basketball and began her life of service in student government. A graduate of UCLA's Theater Arts program, Mary was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. And it is there that she met her husband and partner of 64 years Alan N. Halkett as opposite partners on a blind date. Married post-college, Mary and Alan lived in various places during Alan's military service, then settled in Southern California where they raised their family. Mary lived a life of service to her family and the community, serving as a courthouse docent, Little Company of Mary volunteer, Guardian ad Litem, South Bay Community Helpline listener, member of the Board of Harbor Interfaith Services and Peninsula Seniors, catechism teacher, officer in Agape Ministry and dozens of other activities large and small. Mary's lifelong love of the arts took her to the Telluride Film Festival for 25 straight years, led her to become a founding subscriber of the Geffen Playhouse and an avid reader with a love for biographies. Mary loved travel and exploration, trees and nature, and was constantly curious to learn and try new things. She also had a sly sense of humor and a deep family pride. Mary is survived by her three children, two daughters-in-law and grandchildren Ashley, Megan, Patrick and Bailey. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Agape Outreach Ministry at St. John Fisher Church, 5448 Crest Road, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275. (www.sjf.org) A memorial service is being held Sept. 24 at 11:30a at St. John Fisher church and will be followed by a reception on the premises.

I was sadden to read of Mary's passing. I was the Halkett's mailman for over 32 years before my retirement in 2001. The conversations we had over those years will always be remembered, their (Alan and Mary) kindness goes beyond words. Alan and Mary left an influence on me that will last until we meet again. I can only sign this one way, Love to all of you, Ron (The Mailman)
