Mary Cecilia Naylor passed away on Tuesday, August 17 after a prolonged illness. She leaves behind her husband, Laurence DeShields II of Seattle, WA; sister, Catherine (Katy) and brother-in-law, Greg Ostheimer of Stamford, CT; brother, Michael and sister-in-law, Victoria Naylor of San Pedro, CA; half-brother, Benny and sister-in law, Pia Martin of Stockholm, Sweden; niece, Devon; and nephews, Ian, Julian, and Desmond; stepchildren, Laurence DeShields III, MD and Christina DeShields; and step grandchildren, Jamal DeShields-Beard & Kamariah DeShields and stepfather, Augustinius (Gus) van Hoorn of San Pedro, CA. Her family and large circle of friends from LA to Tacoma will miss her smile and infectious laugh.

She was born in San Pedro, California to Estella and Geoffrey Naylor and attended Crestwood Elementary, Dodson Junior High and San Pedro High School. She received an associate degree from Harbor College and a certification in medical transcription from Bates Technical in Tacoma, WA, and an on-line certification in medical coding.

She was a warm and compassionate woman who enjoyed travel, reading, gardening, fashion, painting and music-with her tastes ranging from Alice Cooper to Puccini. She especially liked visiting her friends and family in Southern California, and her sister Katy and her family in Stamford, CT and at their apple orchard in RI. She was kind, had a wicked sense of humor, was a critical thinker yet non-judgmental, and relished in social gatherings, from a fancy dinner out to a casual beach barbeque. Burial services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of her memory to the charity of your choice.

From the moment that we meet Mary; we knew that she was a beautiful and classy lady.. If the miles apart hadn´t been a factor we would have spent a lot of time together..We will always cherish the moments we were in her presence and how she made us feel..Out heart goes out to her husband( our brother) family and friends..Forever her memories will be cherished.

Dear Katy, Michael, and family, I am so very sorry to hear about Mary´s passing. If you remember, my family lived directly behind yours while we were growing up. I remember Mary was very kind and very smart. Somehow someone made the mistake of thinking I was smart too and I ended up in class with the smart kinds starting in elementary school. Mary was a go to for me when I needed a little extra help with assignments. She was part of my core group of friends for years, including Girl Scouts and we all had so much fun. I am sincerely sorry for your loss. Carole Ortiz
