Michael Alo Obituary

Michael Alo, widely considered one of the best football players in the history of the South Bay, died Monday of complications from diabetes in Anchorage, Alaska, where he had been living for the past several years. He was 53.
"He was the best player I've ever coached," said Ferragamo, a nine-time L.A. City Section champion. "There wasn't a finer football player and there wasn't anything he couldn't do on the field."

Wow! I had no idea Michael Alo passed. I saw a brother in Costco, and he resembled Alo, and I asked him was he Michael Alo. Of course he said no. But thought I'd google him today and I'm stunned! Did not know!!! He was a cold back. Loved going to his games watching him. Seeing many attempt to bring him down, and the jersey would tear away, and he was gone for a long touchdown run! The memories are coming back where I can see it vividly! Rest in peace Michael. And thank you for the memories. You was the coldest high school back I ever saw!!! Alo and Danny Andrews in the backfield!!! Coldest to ever do it!!! Them brothers was nice! Much love brother! Shugars from LA Jordan HS, class of 82.

Mike Alo, best I have ever seen on any football field. I remember the first time I met him. He was throwing the shot put at the L.A. City Finals, I was sitting in the "concrete" bleachers waiting for my race...then, I looked down at my glass of water and saw it move, then move again....like a scene out of Jurassic Park...It was Michael Alo walking down the bleachers! The dude was all muscle. R.I.P. my friend.

I was a freshman when Michael Alo was a senior. I thought he was awesome and was very proud of him. Such a great reputation!!! I was proud to have witnessed all of the games that year and a proud Banning Pilot!!! The best part of high school were those football games and being in the band was so fun. I am thinking of Michael as the anniversary of his death is days away. I remember his ashes were to be spread in San Pedro and hope to be able to witness from afar to allow the family privacy. I pray for God's strength to support the family. I love you Michael Alo, your suffering is over and you will live for eternity praising God. My husband is going down the same road now that Michael did, I know it will end in a peaceful passing to eternity with God

When you make a bold statement that a 10th grader is better than 2 guys who have already been city players of the year, you better know what your talking about. After the very first morning of hell week, Coach Ferragamo knew he had a gem, just as I told him he would. To all of the Alo family, I feel your loss as my heart has broke as has your"s. My love for Michael has always been and will always be. Having played with Harry, coached both Michael and Ricky , and knowing the rest of the Alo family has a special place in my heart. Dear brother Mike, when I got the call that you left I really didn't know what to do. You were such a big part of my life growing up and an inspiration on how to treat people with love and sincere gratitude. I hope you are resting now in God's care. I will never forget your blue city locker dance moves, your boo yah tribe days, and of course watching you play at Banning! You were the best football player I ever saw and the most humble. Thank you Mike for being there for me and all the talks at Dolphin park. I loved listening the music while you guys played basketball all night at Dolphin park. I will never forget our road trip to the bay with Sallie. You sang the whole trip lol! I love you brother and now get up and dance in Heaven.

THE REECES

January 14, 2017

It was a night like no other. A night that will never happen again. A night that those in attendance will never forget.

Some of the greatest athletes in the history of sportsall Banning High School alumnicame together from all around the nation for a special night to honor Coach Chris Ferragamo's retirement after 40 years of coaching at Banning High School. Among the 100 greats were Jamelle Holieway (Oklahoma All American and NCAA National Champion who beat out the legendary NFL Hall of Famer Troy Aikman for the quarterback position at Oklahoma and sent Aikman packing), two-sport USC All-American, NCAA National Champion and NFL star Marvin Cobb, NCAA/USC All American and National Champion and NFL star Danny Reece, Vince Ferragamo ( Cal/Nebraska All American who threw the gutsiest touchdown pass in Super Bowl history), UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero (who stands shoulder to shoulder with Jackie Robinson in the UCLA Hall of Fame), Cal Lutheran running back Robin White, UCLA/NFL star Frank Manumaleuna. The lineup of sports superstars in attendance is too lengthy to list here. They all showed up for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

The high point of this breathtaking evening of celebrating Coach Ferragamo's unmatched string of Los Angeles City Football Championships came when someone asked the question that was on everyone's mind:

Coach Ferragamo: In your 40 years of coaching, who was the best football player you ever coached?
Coach Ferragamo's response came without hesitation:
Michael Alo.

It was as if a bolt of lightning hit the room. The hair stood up on the back of my neck. The crowd of athletesfull of those who had tasted the full measure of fame and victory at the very highest levelsspontaneously leapt to its feet and gave Michael Alo a long and heartfelt standing ovation. Michael was thereby acknowledged as the best of all of the many, many superstars that Banning High School had ever produced. Above Freeman McNeil, above Clarence Reece, above Vince Ferragamo, above Ron Settles, above Steve Rivera, above Stanley Wilson. It was a truly stunning and electric moment. Michael sat there, engulfed by congratulations from many of the greatest athletes Los Angeles has ever known, taking in the salute with a champion's grace and humility. To see such famous superstar athletes on their feet praising one man, Michael Alo, was a truly magic moment.

The comparison between Bo Jackson and Michael Alo is a legitimate one. Both were incredibly powerful athletes. The observation that Bo was faster, but Michael was more diversified is correct. Even though Bo and Michael did not have full and lengthy careers, people know when they are in the presence of greatness.

Coach Ferragamo told the story of how Michael, after hours in the film room with Coach Ferragamo, found a way to beat the unbeatable legendary quarterback John Elway in the Los Angeles City Championship Game by discovering that Elway set his feet differently in taking the snap from the center whenever he planned to pass. This discovery allowed Michael to blitz or drop back or stand firm. Elway is in the pantheon of NFL quarterbacks along with Unitas, Namath, Tarkington, Bradshaw, Title, Young, Farve, Marino, Ferragamo and Montana. When you mention those superstars, you're in tall cotton. The fact that Michael went head to head with Elway and beat Elway says it all.

The Reece Family sends our prayers and condolences to the Alo Family. May God grant you peace. We too are grieving the loss of our football brother. For in Michael Alo, we were blessed to witness true greatness in our time.

I'm deeply sadden to hear about Michael Alo's passing. I had the privilege growing up in the Cabbage Patch with his aiga, playing sports (Dolphin Park), and just hanging out with him at family functions. When we speak about High School football in the Southbay, the conversation is null if Michael Alo's name isn't mentioned. He IS the most athletic player I've ever seen play at the FB position. Speed, power, and agility. He had it all. Intimidation? Well, if you seen his massive body physique when he was in his prime you'll be like "who's that". However, you put a basketball in his hands, he was dunking on you (I witness that). He grabbed a softball bat and the balls were landing in my backyard 400+ feet. Again, the man was a beast. All around athlete. He's a Legend out of Carson, and his legacy will live on to generations to come. Love you uso, have a nice journey. #31BanningPilot #immortal

Michael Alo represented all that was BHS football back in the late 70's and early 80's. It was the zenith of L.A. City football. Banning played the CIF's best and were their equal. The intense Banning-Carson rivalry, which annually drew 19,000-20,000 fans during Alo's years as a player, will never ever be recaptured. Michael was electrifying to watch. If only the Pilots and Colts of today would have seen this storied rivalry back then.

Condolences to the Alo family.
Thank you Michael Alo. Rest in eternal peace.

Back in the 70's and 80's the Marine League was king. I remember watching Stanley Wilson play at Banning and Freman McNeil play.

Then came Mike, this cat was super bad. He was the Earl Campbell of high school. He was tough to stop and hard to bring down. I attended Locke High School and we never stood a chance against Big Mike. One heck of a player.

Mike was voted the best high school football player in the nation in his senior year. I remember it was announced at halftime during a college bowl game I was watching. He was the complete package...a combination of strength, speed, power at running back. He was an excellent blocker. He never came off the field. He also started at linebacker, he was the punter, he kicked off and kicked PATS, he ran back kick offs...there was no player like him during his time. He was so exciting to watch. During an off season, I remember on two occasions I was out riding my bike to a friends house at night and ran into Mike. Both times he was jogging. While most were out partying and just hanging out, Mike was out training. I remember seeing kids at games wearing jerseys with his number #31. Mike was also funny...he had a very humorous side. He had a unique laugh. I went to Carnegie Jr High when he was there before he left to go to Banning High School, Wilmington, Ca. I went to Carson High School the following year, Banning's cross town rival and nemesis. However, a rival we might have been, but I can tell you there were many on our side that admired Michael. His personality and certainly his athlete ability could not be denied. He was and is a high school football legend!

I didn't know Michael Alo personally but I might as well have. I grew up in the South Bay (City of Torrance) and followed his high school career as much as I followed my own school. I knew players on both sides of what was and continues to be one of the biggest high school rivalries, following both Banning and Carson High Schools in the local news papers. I know that to a man, players on both sides were fierce competitors on the field and yet best of friends and brothers off the field. The years Michael Alo played football, both Banning and Carson High Schools yielded some of the best college and professional football players in the country. They were also men of character and Michael led them all by his example. Today we are saddened by the news of his passing. His passing gives us reason to mourn. We are saddened and we will certainly miss him. But his passing also gives us reason to pause to remember what is important in this life and to relive those memories and to remember him for the giant of a man among boys that he was and that we were all blessed to have known him. I was and will always be a Spartan...... But regardless of our high school affiliations, be it Spartan, Colts or whatever, today we are all Pilots and proud to be so as we celebrate his life. Michael, may your body rest in peace as your spirit is reunited with family and loved ones as well as other Pilots and Colts who have also passed. You are now free of all of the physical pains and limitations that have more recently taken its toll on your body. Thank you for providing those of us on the sidelines with so much excitement and for sharing your life with us. Until that great day, God speed.

January 11, 2017

He was a kind person - a beast of an athlete but also a gentle sole off the field. At 16 most of looked like little boys - at 16 he looked like a D1 athlete. He had a great smile and a super sense of humor...He will me missed, "Super Mike".

My condolence to Michael's family. He was an outstanding football player. I remember when we were at Carnegie that he used to practice kicking the ball on the blacktop. The coach would hold the ball on the pavement for him and Michael would send it booming into the sky. He will always be remembered as the pride of Banning High. I associate him and Danny Andrews as the best backfield any school could ever have. Two City Championships! I wish he had the chance to keep going in college at USC, he would have been one of the greatest. After all these years he is still a legend to me and my friends. Please Rest In Peace.
