Michael Bastasch Obituary

September 21, 1960 - January 7, 2021 Michael Andrew Bastasch was born in Seattle, Washington, on September 21, 1960. He spent much of his childhood in Kansas City. However, in 1970, the Bastasch family relocated to Southern California where Michael took up surfing. Michael graduated from the University of San Diego in 1984 with a degree in physics, eventually taking over the family manufacturing business. He married Donna Jean Lappen, the love of his life, on June 6, 1987. They spent the next 33 years together, and had four children. Michael was a constant source of love and fatherly wisdom. To his grandchildren, Michael was larger than life. They will never forget the love and affection their "Pop Pop" showed them. Michael passed peacefully on January 7, 2021 at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach. He is survived by his father, Francis; brothers, Peter (Elizabeth) and James (Mariana); wife, Donna; children, Michael (Jacolyn), Kevin, Beau and Olivia; and grandchildren, Michael and Curtis. He now joins in Heaven his sister, Caryl; mother, Joyce; and father-in-law, Curtis. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on January 23, 2021 at St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church in Redondo Beach. Michael's family will host a celebration of his life after COVID restrictions have been lifted.

I just heard. I’m so sorry for your loss. Such a beautiful soul who kept so many people laughing and full of life back when I went to Highschool in 1980’s. Condolences to his family. God Bless.

january 18, 2021, i walked over to the top of the cliff, over looking palos verdes cove. john cook informed me, michael passed. immediate shock & sadness. this wonderful guy, who along with jimmy b, i spent seasons with, during their high school years, in the ocean, & on the beach, at the cove, passed. this outgoing friend, who some how, some way, was in the ocean - during school hours? with a great spirit. reserved, joyful to be with his brother, & mates. during my 51 years there, he was as kind as any. later in our life, mike would discuss the bakery business & his family. told me he lived - across from malaga school. i had met mrs bastasch, when she answered the door, at their future home, lunada bay. i was delivering a humidor, for her husband, as a gift from jimmy, in costa rica. i will remember michael, much like his photo here, with the pink rose in the lapel of his suit, smiling.

Larger than life, even though are visits were few, the impression I was left with always loomed large and full of joy. I will miss our debates, always civil and lined with humor. Rest In Peace Michael

RIP my brother. Thanks for teaching me to glass a surfboard when we were only 12 in your parent’s garage. All the neighborhood kids from Malaga Cove respected you and your family. You will be remembered. Love, Mark Green
