Richard Carlton Obituary

Richard Albert Carlton

Richard Albert Carlton, devoted husband of Barbara Sherwin Carlton, dedicated father of Jeffrey Richard and Dennis Albert Carlton, and a true gentleman to all who knew him, passed away from natural causes in Torrance, CA on June 22, 2017 at age 95.
Dick was born October 15, 1921 in Lakewood, Ohio, to his parents Albert Delos and Erma Renz Carlton. He and his mother moved to Beverly Hills, CA in 1933. He graduated from Beverly Hills High School in 1939 and was attending the University of Southern California when he volunteered for the war effort in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He joined the US Coast Guard and served as a radar operator aboard the USS Tacoma in the north Pacific until the war's end in 1945.
Dick married his high school sweetheart and true love, Barbara Lorraine Sherwin on September 14, 1945. After Dick's separation from the Coast Guard, the couple moved to the South Bay, living in Hermosa Beach until 1951 and then settling in Redondo Beach where they raised their family.
A master problem solver, Dick took on all of life's challenges with wit and good humor. Throughout his career, he pursued his passion for design and construction, building homes in the Los Angeles area for California Federal Savings and Loan for more than 30 years until he retired as a Vice President in 1984. He subsequently worked in operations for Sherwin Incorporated of South Gate, CA for another 20 years. During much of his life in the South Bay, he was an active member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Redondo Beach, CA where he served in many lay leadership positions.
He was preceded in death by his beloved Bobbie in 2007 after nearly 62 years of marriage. He is survived by his sons and by his grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel, Catherine and Evan Carlton. He will be interred next to Bobbie in a private ceremony at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
In lieu of flowers the family requests gifts in his name be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits

We will all miss Dick -- we moved next door to the Carlton's in 1955. I remember Bobbie and Dick taking us to the beach with them -- teaching me how to body surf, having lunch and THEN stopping at 31 Flavors for ice cream before we headed home. After my parents passed away I kept the connection going -- bringing my 3 granddaughters to meet them and share a lunch of Chicken Salad and chocolate cake for their birthdays. I will always have great memories of my time on Via La Circula and the Carlton's.

Mr. Carlton was just a very special guy. I always enjoyed our banter while he handed out the St. Andrews Sunday bulletins at the first service. With a quick wit and a smile, he made the day better for all. I will miss him.
