Thomas Giles Obituary

June 1, 1986 - Jan. 2, 2022 Thomas Reid Giles died in the early morning of January 2, safe in his room from a suspected drug-related death; he was 35 years old. Tommy, as he was called by close friends and family, was the oldest of three siblings (including two younger sisters, Kimberley Vanessa and Stephanie Emmaline) born to Steven Reid Giles and Khin Khin Chaw, and a graduate of South Torrance High School, Calle Mayor Middle School, and Hickory Elementary. Tommy was born a healthy 9 lbs and grew into an easy tempered but determined young man. Tommy had an incredible smile and beautiful eyes that lit up when he laughed, and could talk with anyone. He was a happy person and could find joy in the smallest things. Tommy was focused and studious throughout his youth with plans to attend university but something in him changed after high school. His life spirit started to flicker on and off, often in unpredictable patterns. During rare moments of clarity, Tommy wanted what any of us want- to be accepted and loved. Our family will forever feel the loss created by losing our brother and son. Tommy, you will always be loved, accepted, and missed. You belonged even if you didn't feel that way. Be at peace and allow yourself to rest- we love you. Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Ceremony in Thomas's honor this Sunday, May 29, 2022, 10:00 am at Point Fermin Park, 807 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro, CA 90731

Tommy was my close friend for several years of high school. The collection of fond memories from that time in the early to mid-2000's includes: regularly body boarding together in the crumbly waves of Torrance Beach, skinning our knees and backs trying to learn to skimboard on flat surf days, obsessing over and critiquing the then-new hip hop and R&B of the era (P.Diddy, Jay-Z, Nelly, Usher), sitting in Corvettes and Porsches at the LA Auto Show, shopping for the whitest of all Nike Cortez' and K-Swiss shoes at the Del Amo Mall, and building our purely theoretical dream cars (always Japanese imports heavily tuned with aftermarket performance parts). Tommy was a smart kid with a lot of passions. He helped me define my interests in an awkward adolescent time when SEEMING "cool" was more important than BEING cool. Without Tommy's friendship - without his unabashed, almost defiant pursuit of these interests and activities - I am certain I would have floundered longer than necessary in the ever shifting trends of my peers, devoid of any identity of my own. I will always be grateful to Tommy for being himself unapologetically, and for demonstrating to me that it was and is okay to like the things you like and feel secure in those interests. It was ACTUALLY cool to be smart, to be yourself, to have tastes and opinions. His passing is shocking, tragic, and far too soon. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends who are no doubt struggling - as I am - with the reality of his premature death. See ya in another life, homie.
