Tommy was my close friend for several years of high school. The collection of fond memories from that time in the early to mid-2000's includes: regularly body boarding together in the crumbly waves of Torrance Beach, skinning our knees and backs trying to learn to skimboard on flat surf days, obsessing over and critiquing the then-new hip hop and R&B of the era (P.Diddy, Jay-Z, Nelly, Usher), sitting in Corvettes and Porsches at the LA Auto Show, shopping for the whitest of all Nike Cortez' and K-Swiss shoes at the Del Amo Mall, and building our purely theoretical dream cars (always Japanese imports heavily tuned with aftermarket performance parts). Tommy was a smart kid with a lot of passions. He helped me define my interests in an awkward adolescent time when SEEMING "cool" was more important than BEING cool. Without Tommy's friendship - without his unabashed, almost defiant pursuit of these interests and activities - I am certain I would have floundered longer than necessary in the ever shifting trends of my peers, devoid of any identity of my own. I will always be grateful to Tommy for being himself unapologetically, and for demonstrating to me that it was and is okay to like the things you like and feel secure in those interests. It was ACTUALLY cool to be smart, to be yourself, to have tastes and opinions. His passing is shocking, tragic, and far too soon. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends who are no doubt struggling - as I am - with the reality of his premature death. See ya in another life, homie.
