Alexander Thompson Obituary

Alexander (Sandy) Mackenzie Thompson, III died suddenly in a cycling accident near Bogotá, Colombia on January 13, 2019. Sandy was born in Minneapolis, MN to Alexander Mackenzie Thompson, Jr and Mary (Polly) Struthers Thompson. He graduated Cum Laude from Yale University with a BS in Engineering. His advanced degrees included an MA in Engineering from the University of Minnesota, an MBA from the Stanford Business School, and a PhD in Economics from Stanford University. He joined the Economics Department at Vassar College in 1977. Sandy became a Full Professor of political economy, was an award-winning teacher, and served as Dean of Studies from 1994 until his retirement in 2007. He also volunteered as an EMT for the Highland Fire Department and published on the economics of volunteerism. Sandy had a life-long love for the outdoors from childhood fishing trips with his father and grandfather. He especially loved backpacking in the Sierras and wilderness canoeing. Sandy moved to Boulder in 2013, where he continued to pursue his passion for cycling. Some of his favorite bike trips included exploring New Zealand, Thailand, the Canary Islands, and Sardinia with his cycling friends. Sandy also volunteered at Bicycle Colorado, where he helped fix bikes for local kids, and at Voices for Children/CASA Boulder as an advocate for foster youth. He is survived by his daughter, Emily Fjaellen Thompson of Oakland, CA; his sisters, Mary Weiler of Austin, TX and Gretchen Thompson of St Paul, MN; his sister-in-law, Susan Richardson of Boulder, CO; his former wife, Bonnie Richardson of Napa, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and cycling companions. We remember him with great admiration and love, and carry on his sense of adventure and legacy of empathy, engagement, and tenacity.

I was lucky enough to ride with Sandy on a tour in Colorado. He was friendly, empathetic, funny, and of course, a very strong rider. He always had something nice to say when I saw him riding around Boulder and Hygiene. His kind soul will be missed.

I am so very sorry to learn about Sandy. He was a very dear and good person and an important part of my youth. I'm glad we got to spend some time together in the early 90s and clear the air between us. I will always remember him fondly.

Dear Family of Sandy: my heartfelt condolences and prayers for your great loss. I worked in the Dean of Studies Dept. from 2001 - 2007 and always had nothing but respect for this fine and intelligent man. He was always polite, witty, professional and a great leader. Although I am in a different department now at Vassar, I often reflect back to my first years here at Vassar working in the Fellowships Office with Susan Davis, Director, and our many interactions with Dean Thompson. May his dear soul rest in peace and it is a comfort knowing that he continued to do the sports he loved so much after retirement and passed doing something he loved tremendously. When I think of Vassar in my retirement, Sandy will be part of the memories.
Most Regretfully,
Susan Fernandez (Blom)

I am so sorry for your loss. Sandy was a kind, supportive colleague. His humor and good sense made it a pleasure to serve on committees with him. I enjoyed helping him book hotels in French-speaking countries so that he and his friends could explore new biking trails. He lived and died an explorer.

My deepest condolences to your family during this most difficult time. There are no words that can ease the pain of losing someone so beloved. May you find comfort and peace in knowing that your loved one is in God's memory, because those who pass on are precious in his eyes. - Psalms 116:15.*
