Ann Garstang

1930 - 2023

Ann Clemence Garstang of Boulder CO was born to the late John and Janet Hawk on November 04, 1930 in Aylesford, Kent, England. The family moved to Cornwall in 1937 so her father could help with her grandfather's farm. Ann was an exceptional student, and attended boarding school at Dartington Hall, a pioneering experiential education school that excelled at preparing students for the entrance exams for England's best universities. Ann won admission to Newnham College at Cambridge, where she received a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics (with Honors) and continued for her Master's degree (with Distinction). She gained her teaching qualification while teaching in London, where she met and married Roy Garstang. She taught until their first child was born. Ann and Roy moved to the United States in 1964, settling in Boulder, Colorado where her second daughter was born. Ann started tutoring math at Flatirons Elementary School when her youngest daughter started kindergarten. She volunteered as a tutor there for approximately 40 years, ran the volunteer program, and founded the PTA. She won a Colorado Governor's Service Award for Volunteer of the Year in 2006. Ann loved to teach math; she tutored CU physics and engineering students in advanced math, and had a busy tutoring business in the evenings, teaching students of all ages. She spent the last 13 years of her life at Frasier Meadows, where she continued to volunteer in many ways. She passed away peacefully at Frasier Meadows Healthcare Center on January 18, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Roy H. Garstang, who died in November 2009. She is survived by her two daughters Jennifer Garstang of Forks WA, and Susan Garstang and her husband Doug Ball of Salt Lake City, UT, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews in England.
