Carrie Malde Obituary

Carrie Malde (née Caroline Elizabeth Rose) died peacefully at her home in Boulder on June 2, 2023, where she had lived since 1959. She was born in Denver on February 9, 1927 to Clarence and Marjorie (Skiff) Rose. Her grandparents were long-time Boulder residents, and her father and grandfather built a one-room log cabin near Red Rock Lake, where she spent many happy days. She grew up with a deep appreciation of the beauty of nature. After her freshman year of college she became a pilot of Piper Cub planes at Sky Ranch in Denver. When she graduated from CU in 1948 she went by ship to Alaska, where she taught for two years in a one-room schoolhouse on the lower Yukon, only accessible by bush plane or boat. Then she taught for two years in Chugiak, where wild lands were being homesteaded. In 1954 Carrie returned to Boulder and met Hal Malde, a geologist. They married after a three-month courtship and had two daughters, which she always said was the best thing she ever did. They lived in Mexico for part of each year between 1963 and 1965, spent field seasons in Santa Fe, Wyoming and Idaho and traveled extensively abroad. She and Hal were active in the Boulder Greenbelt movement, which implemented a tax to protect the city from urban sprawl. Carrie was a lead organizer of the Elementary School Spanish program in Boulder and became the librarian for Reading to End Racism. She bought a little frame house in Grover, Colorado, which combined her interests in art, birding, and prairie landscapes. She was an avid reader and gardener. When her daughters were young, Carrie took art classes at CU, working her way through the curriculum. At age 57 she returned to CU for a master's in fine art (MFA) focusing her creativity on depictions of Colorado landscapes. Carrie was beloved by many for her kindness, wit, and easy conversational manner. She was unpretentious, self-effacing and a keen observer of life and nature. She was known for her limericks and recitations of old songs and verses. She is survived by her daughters, Melissa Ruth Malde (Bob Lenk), Margaret "Meg" Malde-Arnosti (Don); her grandchildren and their spouses, Nick (Amanda), Libby (Erik Hemstad) and Nathan (Raffie Parke) Arnosti; and her cat, Tilly. Donations may be made in her honor to Emergency Family Assistance Association https://www.efaa.org/.

When I was house-bound caring for my husband, Carrie arranged it so that she and
another friend came on Saturdays to play our favorite game - Scrabble. It became the
most wonderful time together and something I looked forward to that week. We also had "Movie Night" in which she came Thursday nights to watch a movie with
my husband and me! My dog never barked at her!
Her presence was a calming influence...she possessed a confidence that everything was going to be alright, in fact ....pleasant. She, also - always brought a treat!

Many years ago when my husband was failing in health and I needed to be home most
of the time, Carrie initiated "Movie Night". She would come every Thursday night and
either bring a movie or we would decide on one and we - Carrie, my very elderly and
unwell husband and I would watch a movie and talk about it afterwards. It was one of the few social events I had in those days. We did this for 3-4 years. I loved it. My
husband loved it and each week we had "Movie Night with Carrie" !!!
She also initiated Scrabble Game days with me and another friend. We did this for
many years. To say Carrie is much missed is a serious understatement! Joan Bloom

Chris and I knew Carrie for many years through the Boulder Valley UU Fellowship. We have enjoyed visiting with her, all too infrequently, the past several years. We are making a donation in her memory to the Emergency Family Assistance Association.

What a joy to know Carrie! She was kind, witty, funny, caring, gracious & full of life. She loved her kitties, too. I feel privileged to know her & Hal. She shared her love of Red Rock Lake and painted many beautiful landscapes of both the high mountains & Boulder. She was generous & happy to share her knowledge & artistic skills with me. I was fledgling photographer & watercolor painter, and both Hal & Carrie shared their knowledge & what inspired them. (Hal was a superb photographer, Carrie was a master artist & painter of Boulder County scenes.) She gave away many of her works of art to those of us who appreciated it. Always happy to share her artistic techniques & encourage others like me to create art. She's one of the best art teachers I've ever had, and refused compensation. Instead, Carrie gave me one of her fabulous artworks - a large colored pencil drawing of the Community Ditch near Eldorado Springs. It always brings a smile to my face because I can remember Carrie's beautiful eyes & her smile. Carrie made the world and Boulder a better place. Thank you and bless you Carrie Rose Malde!
