Catherine Chicoine "Katie" Fleagle obituary, 1986-2022, Boulder, CO

Catherine Fleagle Obituary

Katie entered this world on 1/21/1986 bringing smiles and joy to all who held her. It is with profound sadness that we share that Katie died suddenly and unexpectedly on 7/1/2022. She passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours. As she grew her sweet demeanor and her quiet poise blossomed. Katie had a gift for developing and maintaining beautiful lifelong friendships. She grew up in Boulder attending Sacred Heart Elementary School, Summit Middle School, and Boulder High School. She graduated from CU Boulder in 2008. She decided to become a nurse after an undergraduate degree and was accepted and graduated with a master's degree from DePaul University in Chicago in 2011. Katie met Eric Keifer in Chicago in 2009 and shortly thereafter fell deeply in love. They lived in Chicago until 2015, when they moved to Denver to be closer to her family. Eric proposed to Katie in Rocky Mountain National Park, a short hike from her family's cabin, where she spent many days exploring. They were married at Flagstaff Amphitheater on 9/19/2015. Katie is survived by her loving husband Eric Keifer and two young children, Cora (3 years old) and Caden (4 months) who live in Denver. She lovingly leaves behind her parents, Diane Chicoine and John Fleagle (Boulder, CO); and sister, Elizabeth, brother-in-law Eric Schwartz, and their son, Louis (Broomfield, CO). Katie always valued family and is survived by many beloved cousins, aunts, uncles, and in-laws, including her sister-in-law, Jennifer Keifer. She is preceded in death by her grandparents: Beatrice and Duane Chicoine and Catherine and Dean Fleagle. Katie was empathetic, humble, and gentle her whole life. She found great pleasure in little things like homemade cards or a bouquet of flowers to celebrate holidays or birthdays and knew how to bring gentle touch when things were not going well for someone. As a mother, she found joy in nurturing her children by finding ways to enrich their lives. We can see Katie in Cora everyday through the way she talks and relates to others. Katie's choice to pursue nursing was a natural fit because of her devotion to others and desire to help. She was awarded the DAISY award at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in 2016 for being an extraordinary nurse. Katie lived a life grounded in her values, prioritizing her family with a passion for kindness. She saw the good in others and the world and brought joy to all those who knew her. A celebration of Katie's life is being planned and will be announced later. In keeping with Katie's devotion to others, a fund has been established at the Boulder Community Hospital (BCH) Foundation, bch.org/katiefleaglefund. It supports those BCH employees aspiring to become nurses through scholarships and awards as well as those wishing to advance their nursing education. Katie recognized the financial burden that so many face in pursuing an education.

My 47 yr old daughter died this past March. I could never have imagined the razor-sharp pain of losing a child, even one who is an adult. Everyone grieves differently but do be patient with yourself. This hurts so much. You are not alone.

Dear John and Diane; I have just learned of this breathtaking loss. My apologies for not having seen it sooner. I remember your blessed Katie so well.
There was always a light in John's eye when he Spoke of her and nothing made him happier than to have a minute to chat about his daughters. I'll always remember her loving passion for people and their journeys. Having had the pleasure of having her shadow me in the clinic...Katie left an indelible impression on me because she expressed such sincere caring for each person.
The mystery of life and death is so deep and so lonely to explore and my loving prayers and heart stand with you from afar. In my years at RMCC I developed the ritual of lighting a candle in memory of the person and offering light to the soul. I will do this for your Katie. And in those meditations, know that I am also sending you John and Diane, immense love. Her Daughter looks like a ray of sunshine and beautiful spirit like her mama.
May our Holy Mother of God embrace you and hold you during your deepest pain.
With love, Andrea

Katie was one of my best friends from High School- I couldn't even begin to put into words what a profound loss this is for everyone who was touched by Katie's friendship. She was a breath of fresh air and one of the most fun and light hearted people I know. I'm so grateful for Katie's friendship in getting me through high school and college and for all the amazing memories, including meeting Cora, having the honor to be a bridesmaid in her beautiful wedding to Eric, traveling for 6 weeks in Spain in 2005, and endless inside jokes that I will cherish forever. My love and prayers are constantly with the Fleagle and Keifer families and I look forward to helping share her amazing spirit with her beautiful babies, Cora and Caden.

Dr Fleagle and your loving wife. Hillary Browne my dear pal told of this sad horrific news. My heart breaks for you. Greer my daughter and Katie played basketball and you were their Coach. You also saved my life when I had breast cancer and I´m fine now 16 years later. I´m understanding that you have a lot of family around and I know you are holding each other tight. There are no words for this type of loss. Please know that so many people love you and are holding you in love and light. Blessings. Patty Hansen.
I remember Katie as just so sweet and so dear and so funny.

Katie was a Summit Middle School student in my history class. She was such a bright light & a joyful learner. She befriended everyone. All her goodness & joy will continue to live on in her beautiful family, but there are no words to express my sympathy in this sudden & tragic loss. Lovingly, Cheryle Kapsak
