Michael Wertheimer Obituary

Michael Matthew Wertheimer passed away on Friday, December 23, 2022, as a result of complications following a fall. He was born March 20, 1927, in Berlin. His Jewish parents, alarmed by rising Nazism, fled the country in 1933 and settled in New Rochelle, New York, where Michael grew up. He attended Fieldston School, Swarthmore College, Johns Hopkins University, and Harvard University, emerging with a PhD in psychology. He was briefly at Wesleyan University and then, in 1955, accepted a faculty position at the University of Colorado, where he came to focus on the history of psychology and where spent the rest of his career. He was very involved in the psychology undergraduates' organization Psi Chi. Many students kept in touch with him for years as their own careers developed, to his considerable pleasure. He held numerous productive roles in the American Psychological Association, and produced a great many books, articles, reviews, and presentations. His final publication was a personal memoir, Facets of an Academic's Life. The Rockies attracted him from the moment he first saw a photo of the Flatirons when considering the post at CU. He was an enthusiastic mountaineer, and actively participated in the Colorado Mountain Club and the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group for many years. Music was also a constant presence in his life; he sang songs, played several instruments for family and friends, devotedly attended classical concerts, and composed small pieces himself. He took his children on road trips every year, eventually visiting all fifty states, and in the second half of his life he traveled the world with curiosity and admiration, in the company of his wife Marilyn. His connections with family and friends were legion, always deep and vivid. He is predeceased by his brother Valentin Wertheimer, his sister Lise Wertheimer Wallach, and his first wife Nancy MacKaye Wertheimer, and survived by his wife Marilyn Schuman Wertheimer, his brother Peter Hornbostel, his children K Wertheimer Watkins, Mark David Wertheimer, and Benjy Wertheimer, and, as he was fond of saying, three children-in-law, eight grandchildren, seven grandchildren-in-law, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

I was a failing undergrad at CU when I changed my major to Psychology and took Dr. Wertheimer´s class in History of Psychology. He got me so completely interest in Psychology. And as a first generation immigrant child myself, his ability and fun he had with language gave me a sense of pride for being able to speak another language, besides English.
And it definitely set me on a correct academic course when he invited me to be in his graduate level classes and agreed to be my honors advisor. It was just neat to be able to sit in his living room and have great discussions not just about Psychology, but about life, enjoying a cup of tea and biscuits.
Thank you Dr. Wertheimer!
You have changed my life and showed me how to be truly great mentor in life!
My condolences to the family, he loved so much and to the field of teaching.
Most sincerely,
Michelle Kim

I served on a couple of committees in psychology with Michael and followed him on the American Psychological Association's (APA) Board of Directors. We talked about APA issues quite a bit. On a long-term planning committee, I came to know that he was much more than smart; he was wise too. (Wisdom is much rarer than smarts.) He knew how to set both personal and professional priorities. Obviously, he was loved by his family and friends, but was friend and highly respected colleague to scores and scores of psychologists. He also lived a life that attempted to recognize that all fields, but especially psychology, will make the same errors over and over if they do not learn their history. A life well lived, Michael! We are lesser without you, but better off for you.

Michael seemed like a truly incredible, kind man who left such a beautiful impact on this earth. I am so incredibly sorry for the loss of such a special soul- his seemingly love-filled spirit will continue to leave its mark on this world, I´m sure of it.
Sending so much love.

My sincere condolences to Michael´s family. He was such a kind and gentle man. I believe it was 1973 when I attended my first Rocky Mountain Psychological Association meeting as a very junior faculty member from a small college in Nebraska, and there he was, welcoming me to the fold. So many RMPA memories over the years. He touched so many lives. Thank you Michael.

My most beloved father ... I have loved you from my very first breath, and, as you prepare to take your last, may you know that - with unending love - I will hold you very close in my heart for the rest of my days.

One of the great joys of my life has been to see you in myriad wonderful roles - as a father, grandfather, great grandfather, husband, son, brother, psychology professor and mentor to thousands of students, expert administrator, gifted musician, mountaineer, author, mentor and so much more ... yet what always speaks most directly to my heart is simply the depth and beauty of your soul.

In this moment, I especially want you to know how extremely proud I am to be your son. Who you are, what you have accomplished, and how you have inspired me (not to mention countless students!) over the years are all great gifts to this world - and particularly to me. It is my fervent hope that I may reflect at least a small part of those gifts back to you with what I´m sharing with you now.

May this message illuminate and define all that I've meant when I might only have had a passing moment to say, "I love you, Pa."

All that I say here - and much, much more, some of which transcends anything that could be conveyed in words - is embodied in that short phrase.

I LOVE YOU, PA!!!!!

We loved visiting Michael and Marilyn in their beautiful home on 6th street where they enjoyed watching the wildlife. Once they showed us a robin nest right under their window, and they often told us of the deer that visited their yard. They had such a zest for living, for traveling, and for sharing their stories. They were especially proud of the many accomplishments of their family.

Michael gave so much to our profession of academic psychology and asked for nothing in return. He is missed and his books keep much of "nearly lost" psychology vivid and influential.

Dr. Michael Wertheimer was an amazing professor. He taught the History of Psychology course, which I took as an undergraduate, in the late 1960s. What a treasure! I learned so much from him and went on to get my doctorate in psychology as well.

Marilyn, I am so sorry to hear of Michael's passing.
One of my memories of him was his playing the harmonica. I am sorry that I don't remember where we were but I remember that I wish I could play them as well has he did. As I was reading about his accomplishments, I was impressed by his career.
I want you to know how much I love the pictures at the RR that you and Michael took on your trips around the world.

Doctor Wertheimer was a remarkable teacher, who was an immense help to me when I returned to CU to pursue my pre-med studies, and participate in the Honors Program. The CU Psych Dept of the 1980s was a powerhouse, a sight to behold, and Dr. Wertheimer made it human, welcoming, and a place of wonder. The seminars in his magical home on 6th street remain etched in my memories forever, and he will always remain an inspiration. Thank you, Dr. Wertheimer, a thousand times, thank you...
