Raymund Haddock Obituary

Raymund M. Haddock passed away peacefully with his family at his side on June 13, 2018. A Service of Celebration for the Life of Ray will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 24 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1419 Pine Street, Boulder, 80302, followed by a reception at the church. A private family burial will be held at Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder, with military honors presented by the United States Army. Ray was born in Leeds, England to G. Marston Haddock and Joan "Peter" Haddock on Feb. 26, 1932. At the age of nine months, he, his brother Philip and his parents came to the United States via the Panama Canal to California. Ray was tutored by his mother as the family made many cross-country trips in a small travel trailer, then graduated from Delbarton School in Summit, New Jersey in 1948. He attended Villanova for two years and completed his college education at the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and became a U.S. citizen in Seoul, South Korea on February 14, 1954. Ray married Marion Crews in 1956. They were traveling to California from New Jersey in 1956 when they stopped in Boulder to visit his brother, Phil, and never left. The couple had two children, Kathy and Steve. He opened the Haddock Insurance Agency in 1959. Ray served as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Colorado in 1982, as president of the Colorado Chapter of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters and on numerous Agent Advisory Boards to insurance carriers. He also was active in the Boulder Jaycees, serving as their president. Many remember Ray as "the voice" of the Ray and Raymond ads on KBOL, when he had the pleasure of working with actor Raymond Burr to promote his agency and independent insurance agents. Ray married Joan Meyer Houghes on April 28, 1984. Together they expanded their home and enjoyed the company of many Shelties and several cats. They traveled to England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand during the course of their marriage. They worked together at the insurance agency until they retired in January of 2017. Ray loved golf, enjoying many hours playing with friends at Flatirons Country Club and later the Omni Interlocken. His paternal step-grandfather was famed course designer Alister Mackenzie, and it was Ray's desire to try to play as many Mackenzie courses he could. Among papers left to him by his father, Ray discovered "The Spirit of St. Andrews," an unpublished manuscript by Mackenzie. He published it in 1995, just in time for the British Open at St. Andrews, where he was involved in many book-signing events. The book opened doors to the Mackenzie Historical Society and golf courses in England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, as well as many in the United States. Proceeds from book sales were donated to the Mackenzie Historical Society to establish a scholarship fund for budding golf course architects. Ray is survived by his wife Joan; former wife, Marion Hopper; daughter Kathy Haddock of Broomfield; son Stephen and his wife Lani of Monte Sereno, Calif.; brother Philip of Black Forest, Colo.; nephews Robert Haddock (Robyn) and Christopher Haddock (Becky); nieces Michelle Pring (Rick), Jeanette Haddock and Suzanne Cechini; five grand nieces and nephews; and seven great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family would like to express their deep thanks to the medical providers who gave Ray a chance at life for the past 20 years: Western Nephrology, Boulder Heart Cardiology, Alpine Urology, Rocky Mountain Cancer Center, Boulder Bone and Joint, and the staffs at Boulder Community Health ICU and Avista Hospital. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church (at the address above or stjohnsboulder.org), St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org), the Humane Society of the Boulder Valley (hsbv.org), The Heritage Foundation (heritage.org) or the charity of the donor's choice.
