Richard Keenan Obituary

Richard "Buster" Lee Keenan, 61, unexpectedly passed away on March 31, at his home in Boulder. He was born on September 15, 1960, in Denver. After attending primary and secondary school in Guymon, Oklahoma, he attended Oklahoma State for three years before moving to Boulder in the late 1980s to work at the Boulder Book Store. Buster was a nationally-known independent bookseller and had been an integral part of the local and regional book community for more than 30 years. He loved live music and enjoyed many special times with friends at concerts and festivals. He had an excellent collection of cool T-shirts, and among his many talents was knowing by heart all the words to the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" soundtrack. His unswerving commitment, generosity, and helpful attitude toward his family, friends, colleagues, and bookstore patrons were what made him an integral part of our lives. He will be greatly missed. To paraphrase one of his favorite musicians Sam Bush, "[He] was a friend of mine/Very close at heart to me/I had to let [him] fly away/Into the night an angel to be...." He is survived by his mother Peggy Keenan of Guymon, Oklahoma, his brother Larry (Tess) Keenan of Arkansas, nephews Paul (Christine) Keenan of Dumas, TX, and Cole Keenan of Canon, Texas, great nephew Mason, nieces Natalee and Olivia. He is preceded in death by his father, Larry Paul Keenan I, and his grandparents Mary and LaVur Book and Paul and Renee Keenan. A celebration of life will be held at the Boulder Book Store on May 22, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. Please RSVP at BusterBBS.eventbrite.com. The family will also hold a remembrance in Guymon. In lieu of flowers, Buster's family encourages donations in his honor to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC), https://www.bincfoundation.org.

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss of Buster. He often talked fondly about his family.

I feel a hole in my heart at learning today of his passing. Buster was a true friend to everyone, yet he was so present with you that you´d swear you were the only one. I worked with Buster for five years, and was his friend for 24. From being the videographer at my wedding to the photographer of my newborn, along with uncountable acts of kindness in between, Buster was consistently the most responsive, patient, gentle and generous person I knew. He is what made BBS feel like home to me. He had a way of treating people that makes him sorely missed. I miss my fun, bighearted, smiling, storytelling friend. And like so many that knew him, I am so grateful he was in my life.

I feel a hole in my heart at learning this morning of Buster´s passing. He was a true friend to everyone, yet he was so present with you that you´d swear you were the only one. He is what made BBS feel like home to me. He had a way of treating people that this world sorely misses. I dearly miss my fun, bighearted, smiling, storyteller friend. And like so many that knew him, I am so grateful he was in my life.
