Shirley Scott Obituary

Shirley Marion Scott, age 96, of Boulder, Colorado passed away on Friday, 10 June, 2022. Shirley was born to Charles F. and Mayme Harless in Durham, NC on 13 February, 1926. Shirley was an incredibly strong woman who survived the death of one child and two husbands but never lost her love for life or for others. She was unbelievably nonjudgmental and was considerate to everyone. She found beauty in everything from Christmas lights to...rats. In addition to seeing the beauty in everything around her, Shirley was a devoted Christian and her church life meant the world to her. Shirley was involved in church activities from a young age. She became a member of the First Baptist Church of Boulder (now Pine Street Church) in 1952 when she and her first husband moved to Boulder. She was involved in many church activities throughout her life to include the church choir and multiple women's ministries (including taking food to the "old people" until her mid 80's). Shirley was also an avid outdoorswoman. We are pretty sure she was born with roller skates on her feet and fairly certain she roller skated her way into Heaven. She was on the womens basketball team in both Highschool and College. When playing football with the boys, she was somehow able to catch a football by its trailing edge after two thirds of it had passed her grasp. However, we can't figure out how she broke her wrist trying to open a Pepsi bottle (hmmm, roller skates are probably part of this equation...). Shirley graduated from Sanford High School in Sanford, NC in June of 1944. She then attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia (then called Madison College) and graduated with a degree in Sociology in 1948. She was in the Glee and Spanish Clubs and was the director of the freshman choir. After graduation, she taught school in Norfolk, Virginia. Shirley met her first husband, John W. Budd, who was serving with the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC when her parents opened their home in support of young US soldiers in need of warm meals and shelter. John was an avid outdoorsman who was born and raised in Colorado. John and Shirley were married at the First Baptist Church in Sanford, NC on 26 August 1951. After John's honorable discharge from the Army, they moved to Boulder. John passed away on 22 April 1982. Shirley seemed to attract outdoorsmen. Her second husband, Gayle (Scotty) Scott, was also an avid outdoorsman and the two of them enjoyed many memorable moments together in the mountains of Colorado. They were married on 30 September 1984. Scotty passed away on 6 September 2016. Shirley is survived by four children; Ann-Marie, John K, Becky and David, seven grandchildren; Amber, Tyler, Roanna, Ashley, Lian, Savannah and Lejla, and three great grandchildren; Trevin, Terrik and Lane. Shirley was an incredible woman of great character and will truly be missed by her family and friends.

Sorry to be late in response but just learned of Shirley's passing. We have exchanged cards every Christmas since I left Boulder in 1990. I was very fond of Shirley. She had a wonderful sweet disposition and interacted with patients in such a compassionate way. It was such a pleasure to work with her at BMC. Deepest sympathies to all family. Dr. Buck

To Shirley's children, my condolences on the recent passing of your mother. Shirley penned a lovely note for my father on his 75th birthday. May your memories bring you comfort.
