Steven Stolz Obituary

Steven D. Stolz was born in Wahoo, Nebraska to Homer and Geraldine (Yost) Stolz. When he was about 10, he, his parents and brother David moved to Boulder. That began years of exploring the foothills and the mountains, graduating from Fairview High School in 1962 and nearly completing his BA in English from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He got involved in rock climbing, motorcycle riding and his lifelong commitment to left leaning politics. Steve began his work life in the "grounds" department on the CU campus, mostly working with the trees and becoming a self-educated arborist. For many years he planted, trimmed and admired the variety of trees on campus while often introducing new ones. He sometimes transplanted found seedlings that sprouted randomly to appropriate sites to see how they would do. Steve created micro climates for a diversity of native and non-native trees that now constitute a unique arboretum. Always looking for beauty, he found it in trees, architecture, adobe construction, vistas, animals and people. He always noted and remembered the color of people's eyes. He made furniture with only hand tools. He would make the whole piece in his mind's eye over months. Then quickly it was made and it was perfect. Steve was married to Cheryl Boyce. He raised her son, Michael, from age 3 with her until her death in 1992 and by himself after that. Michael was with Steve days before his death. Michael Boyce lives in Jackson Wyoming with his wife, Beverly and daughter, Cora. Steve and Laurie Farmen have been together since 1995 and married in 2000. They lived happily until he died of ALS at home, his loved ones with him; Laurie, brother David Stolz and friends Loren Weinberg, Andrea Montoya, Susan Gerhart and Charlotte Buck. He is also survived by Cheryl's family, mother Jean Whiles, brother Mark Schumann and his wife Chris and daughter Katie. "and in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make". I had the honor of knowing Steve and Laurie in the final year of his life. They were a gift to me with their heartfelt truth and evident love for each other. This honor will be cherished always. Sending lots of love to Steve's family and friends.

I knew Steve through my dear friend, Laurie. I know he was a wonderful, devoted partner, and they had a strong, loving relationship for many years. My heart goes out to Laurie and all of Steve's family and friends who will miss him so much.

Steve was my buddy. I barely knew him, but he was my buddy and mentor. Alice, my wife, knew Steve from 50 years ago, and I looked up to Steve from afar. I loved his outdoorism, his comfort in the physical world, his competence, his humanity. His match with Laurie was a home run for both of them. His ALS was a chop block. I grieve, and I grieve the more for Laurie and Steve's family. What a loss for all of us.

I knew Steve from his horticulture work at CU. He was a wonderful, caring person. I knew Cheryl as well and know how devoted he was to Michael. What a great guy!

I know Steve as beloved mate to my friend Laurie. Despite the 1800 miles I live from Boulder, Steve's devotion as a partner, his abiding love of Laurie, and his gentle way of moving through the world were so deep and profound they could be felt even from this distance. I was touched by his goodness and grateful for his presence in my sweet friend's life.

Steve was like a big brother to me as I grew up. He was the same age as my twin sisters, and our mothers were very close friends. I remember homemade ice cream get-togethers and lots of fun times over the years. He was an important part of my youth, and I'm glad he was part of my life.

Steve was and in my mind is a good man, a good friend and a calm presence in this world. Steve had good judgment and a sense of what to do right. the world is a lesser place today, Now that Steve is gone. My condolences to his family.

Steve was a gentle, thought filled person and we were honored to be part of his Taos visits. Laurie was his pride and joy...a blessed marriage between them. We smile as we remember Steve telling us of the 'wedding haberdasher' ...a splendid look and how we will remember him. God bless you all as you honor the life of this special man.

What a beautiful obituary. Thank you for writing this - I only met Steve once or twice and knew him more through stories from King. It is lovely to have a fuller picture of his life. My sincere condolences to all of you who loved him.
