Zoe McFarland Obituary

Zoe Bucuvalas McFarland, 88, was born August 30th, 1934 in Boston to Constantine and Paraskeve, both Greek emigrants. She and her older brother Michael grew up in Dorchester where the family had strong ties with the Greek-American community. Zoe attended college at Bates College in Maine and graduated from Simmons College in Boston, in 1956 with a BS in Business. Zoe met her husband, Robert B. McFarland when she was working for her father's law practice and Bob was a resident at the Mass General Hospital, studying pathology. They were married at the Greek Orthodox Church in Boston on June 1, 1958. They moved to Denver where Bob was a resident in Internal Medicine. Soon after arrival, they had their first child, Laura Anne in 1959. After completing residency in 1961, Bob and Zoe settled in Boulder, Bob started his private practice, and their second child, Bruce Damon, was born. Zoe volunteered for many organizations - Jaycee Jems, St. Johns Episcopal Youth Group, Get Out the Vote, the Boulder Safe House, and the Women's Resource Center. Zoe rejoined the workforce during the early 70's and held positions in Human Resources for Boulder Community Hospital and the University of Colorado. At the time of her retirement in 2003, Zoe was an Accounting Administrator for the CU Civil Engineering Department. Zoe enjoyed hosting dinner parties, her kids birthday parties, holiday celebrations with neighbors, and weekly bridge games. She was an adventurous cook, always trying new recipes - some say her baklava was the best they have ever tasted! Her large network of friends were of paramount prominence in her life, and her passion for bridge led to over 60 years of lifelong friends. Zoe was a strong supporter of the performing arts, attending the Denver Symphony, the Central City Opera, the Denver Ballet and the Vail Dance Festival. Zoe was preceded in death by Bob in 2008, but not before they had their golden wedding anniversary. She is survived by her daughter Laura Mann of Bingen WA, son-in-law John, grandson Tyler; her son Bruce McFarland of Boulder and granddaughters, Avalon, Margaux, and Valyria; and her two younger brothers John Bucuvalas, of NYC and Steven Bucuvalas of Albuquerque, NM and their families. A memorial service at St. John's Episcopal Church is planned for Thursday January 19th at 1:30. She had expressed a desire that donations, in her name, be made to the cause of women's services and specifically reproductive rights.
