Danny Lee Mattox, 78, formerly of Starkville, passed away in Golden, Col. on Friday, December 5, 2025. Born in Alcorn County on October 8, 1947, to Oliver Lee Mattox Jr. and Joyce Mills Mattox, Dan grew up in the Kossuth community and graduated from Kossuth High School in 1965. He earned a degree in Agricultural Education from Mississippi State University in 1970.
Dan married his beloved wife, Trichia Wegman Mattox, in January of 1966. Together they raised two children (Sonny & Dana) and built a life anchored in faith and family. Dan began his career with Farmers Home Administration in Benton County in 1971 and retired in 2004. During his FHA career, Dan served as Superintendent of Farmer Programs, Acting State Director, and Area Director.
After retiring in 2004, Dan helped care for his ailing father and farmed while raising cattle. A devoted Mississippi State Bulldog, he enjoyed driving the campus shuttle in Starkville – a role that kept him close to the university he loved. In 2022, Dan and Trichia moved to Colorado to be near family and receive needed medical care.
Dan was known for his honesty, loyalty, integrity, and kindness. He lived his faith openly and touched countless lives through generosity and service. It would be hard to find a person who met.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Trichia; son, William "Sonny" Mattox; daughter, Dana Mattox Bair (Chris); grandchildren Maddie Bair, Walker Mattox Kirby (Brian), Jack Bair, Kate Mattox Gates (River), Caroline Mattox, Vann Bair, and Libby Mattox; great-granddaughter Summer Gates; brother Dr. Johnny Mattox (Jean); and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service celebrating Dan's life will be held at Union Baptist Church, 324 C.R. 560 in Kossuth, on Saturday December 13, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be begin at noon. Burial will follow the service. A reception welcoming friends and family to gather and celebrate Dan's life will be held immediately following the committal service.
