Donald Meton Schell

1934 - 2018

Aug. 8, 1934 - June 1, 2018 Sacramento Donald M. "Don" Schell, lost a brief battle with pancreatic cancer and passed away peacefully in his Sacramento home on June 1, at the age of 83. Don was born Aug. 8, 1934 and lived in Selby, SD. His family moved to Woodland in 1943, where he grew up and graduated from Woodland High School in 1952. After two years at San Jose State University, Don enlisted for a short stint in the US Air Force. Don and his first wife, Winnie (Lyons), settled in Sacramento, where he as resided for over 60 years. Don will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Norene Cooke Schell; his son, Michael (Maria) Schell; daughters, Denise Turner and Heidi (Bob) Harrison; stepsons, Donald (Sandy) Cooke Jr., and Tim Cooke; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren; older brother, Edgar (Colleen) Schell; sister-in-law, Alberta (Cooper) Schell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred "Winnie" (Lyons) Schell; stepson, Michael Cooke; son-in-law, Bruce Turner; parents, Fred and Lydia (Nusz) Schell; sisters, Lorraine (Bill) Nathan, Glendora (Tom) Goulding, Eileen (Tom) Rose and Alice (Verl) Gordon, and brother, Alvin Schell. Don's interment will be at East Law Elk Grove in a private ceremony. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 7595 Center Parkway, Thursday, July 5, at 11:30 a.m. Remembrances to St. Luke's Lutheran Church or St. John's Program for Real Change.
