Dorothy Llewellyn Allen Flynn

1924 - 2018

Dec. 19, 1924 - April 22, 2018 Chico, CA Dorothy entered this world on December 19, 1924, in Morristown, NJ, and left it peacefully on April 22 in Chico, CA. She was the youngest daughter of Fredrick M. Allen, M.D. and Belle W. Allen. Dorothy graduated from Eagle Rock High School in the Los Angeles area. She attended the University of California in Davis, majoring in animal husbandry. She was unable to complete her studies and graduate because the university was closed due to WWII. Driving a truck for the Army in Sacramento she met and later married the love of her life, Herb Flynn. She and Herb had six children during the course of their marriage. Dorothy worked for many years at the Woodland Clinic in the lab as a Histology Technician. After she retired from that position, she volunteered as a driver for the Community Care Car. She often laughed that she was older than the folks she was driving! By the time the last of the six children had left the family home, Dorothy and Herb had divorced and she was free to try some of the things she'd always wanted to do, one of which was to learn to fly an airplane. At age 50 she started ground school training and over the next decade received her pilot's license, her instrument rating, her commercial rating, and her instructor's rating. She was an involved and active member of The 99s, a women's flying organization, for which she served in a leadership capacity. To give her more reason to fly, she volunteered with the Yolo County Sheriff's Air Squadron, searching for marijuana grows from the air. Dorothy also flew Angel Flights taking ill people to medical facilities around the country for treatment. Flying was her passion and her reason for living. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Dr. Mary Belle Allen; and her son, Michael Flynn. Surviving are her children, Mary Flynn Richardson (Keith) of Cameron Park, CA; Louise Flynn (Pat) of Eagle, AK; Shirley Flynn of Skagway, AK; Ann Findley (Tim) of Chico, CA; and Jean Flynn of Gran Ronde, OR. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 12 great -grandchildren. Funeral services will take place at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodland, CA at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 4, 2018.
