Gary Dettling of Woodland, died at age 71 on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010. Gary was born on Sept. 23, 1939, in Woodland. He attended local schools and was a Woodland High graduate before serving in the U.S. Air Force where he achieved the rank of sergeant. Later he attended UC Davis.
Gary was a lifelong Yolo County farmer, recognized with the Outstanding Young Farmer Award for Yolo County and later was honored with second place with the California Young Farmer Award. In 2000, Gary traveled to Azerbaijan as part of a team to teach rice growing to farmers of that nation. Additionally, Gary was a lifetime member of Woodland's Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Woodland Elks Lodge.
Gary is survived by his daughters, Jamie Dettling and Gina Priest; two grandchildren, Ava and Stella Priest; and brother, Richard (Dick) Dettling. He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Ona Dettling.
A viewing and Rosary is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 1, at McNary's Funeral Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland, with the Rosary recited at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, 860 West St. Memorials or donations in Gary's memory may be made to a charity of the donors' choice or to the Woodland United Way, 1017 Main St., Woodland, 95695-3530. McNary's Funeral Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
