Marcella was called to our Heavenly Father on Thursday, July 22, 2010.
Marcella was born in St. Paul, Minn., to August and Clara Steglich. She grew up in St. Paul and attended Luther College where in 1931 she was introduced by one of her close classmates to August Henry Hintz, a seminary student at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. She continued her education at Ramsey Business College in St. Paul. August and Marcella were engaged in 1933 and were married in 1935, following his graduation from Wartburg. After six years at three Lutheran churches in South Dakota, where three of their four children were born, the Hintz family accepted a call to a Lutheran church in Arcadia, where in 1944 their fourth child was born.
In 1947, the family moved to Woodland, where Reverend Hintz was the first "called" pastor of American Lutheran Church. From 1958 to 1963, the Hintz ministry continued at University Lutheran Church in Long Beach, followed by three years at Trinity Lutheran Church in Porterville, where Rev. Hintz suffered a fatal heart attack in 1965.
Following Rev. Hintz's death, she worked for a short time in Porterville, and then relocated to Sacramento. Schooled in business, she accepted a position managing the office for Bearing Supply Co. in Sacramento, where she met her second husband Clarence (Buzz) Newberry. They married in 1970 and bought a home in Sacramento, where she enjoyed annual family gatherings for the holidays. Buzz passed away in 1982. At the urging of her family, Marcella purchased a home in Woodland at Leasureville Retirement Park. From 2007 until her death at age 96, she resided at St. John's Retirement Village in Woodland.
Throughout her life, Marcella was an active member of all the churches where she lived. She was loved by all her family, possessed a wonderful sense of humor, and had many lifelong friends with whom she spoke of often and corresponded. She is survived by her sons Luther (Claire) Hintz and Gary (Diane) Hintz, and her daughters Darlene Fredericks (Bill) and Janice Chriss (Larry). She will be greatly missed by them and also by her seven grandchildren, as well as great-grandchildren.
Remembrances can be made to American Lutheran Church and to St. John's Retirement Village in Woodland, or to Yolo Hospice in Davis.
