Rafael Gutierrez died Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Woodland Memorial Hospital at age 64.
Mr. Gutierrez was born in La Piedad, Michoacan, Mexico on Feb. 6, 1942 to Martiano and Maria de Jesus (Rincon) Gutierrez. He had been a Knights Landing resident for 30 years. At the age of 18 he began playing professional soccer for the Monarcas in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico and continued playing professionally for a total of eight years. In Yolo County, he was employed by Joe Schriener Farms of Woodland.
Survivors include Mr. Gutierrez's wife of 37 years, Juana Gutierrez of Knights Landing; his daughters, Claudia Gutierrez of Sacramento and Maria de Lourdes Vega and her husband Ruben of La Piedad, Michoacan, Mexico; his son, Rafael Gutierrez Jr. and his wife Yolanda of La Piedad; five grandchildren; his sister, Maria Guadalupe Solorzano of Knights Landing; his brother, Jose Gutierrez of La Piedad; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Maria Elena Mata and his brother, Martin Gutierrez.
Services: A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 513 Locust St., Knights Landing. Private interment will follow in Mexico. Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
