Dennis Connors Obituary

KINGSTON-Dennis J. Connors, 75, of Kingston, died Friday morning, Nov. 29, 2019 at home. Born Nov. 8, 1944 in Binghamton, N.Y., a son of the late Edward and Margaret (Steed) Connors. Dennis was drafted into the Army in 1967 and served one year in Vietnam. During that time, he received the Bronze Star because he, “Without regard for his personal safety, Specialist Connors repeatedly braved the hail of enemy fire … working tirelessly until all of the wounded had been treated and taken to a safe location.” Dennis received a BS from SUNY Cortland and an MFA from SUNY New Paltz. He also spent a year studying in Rome at the Academy of Fine Arts. Additionally, Dennis received a master of Informational Science from SUNY Albany. As an undergraduate at SUNY Cortland, Dennis was NYS wrestling champion. For 23 years, Dennis served as the chef d’atelier of the sculptor George Rickey. His second career was as an Elementary School Librarian in the Kingston City School district where he worked for 12 years. Dennis loved the outdoors, helping the environment, restoring houses, helping others and coaching. During his tenure at KCSD, he coached modified wrestling, Girls’ JV Volleyball, and Boys’ JV Tennis. Dennis was a prolific sculptor, painter, and mixed media artist. He found artistic creation to be an invaluable therapeutic activity to combat the PTSD he suffered from his experience on the ground in Vietnam. Dennis loved Kingston and worked to improve it through multiple venues. Dennis volunteered at the Trolley Museum and drove the trolley down to Kingston Point. He volunteered at the Art Society of Kingston and the Clinton Ave Methodist Church soup kitchen and was a longtime member of the AOH and the VFW. Dennis helped start the Kingston Biennial Sculpture show and spearheaded the Kingston Bluestone Festival. He oversaw the renovation of five homes in the city of Kingston, the latest of which is on the national and state historic registry. Dennis is survived by his wife of 48 years, Valerie; his daughters Christina and Colleen; his son James; and his son Patrick and his wife Miranda. Dennis’s beloved grandchildren are Lula, Arlo, and Anderson. Dennis is survived by his sisters Kathy Dubbels, Peggy (Bill) McCormack, Colleen Kuehner, and Ellen (Bob) Hantsch. Dennis’s surviving brothers are Patrick (Mary), Michael (Patricia), and Tom (Linda). Dennis is predeceased by his brother Timothy and his niece Denise Dubbels. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, Inc., 27 Smith Avenue, Kingston. www.jvleahyfh.com Friends and family will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday, Dec. 3rd from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A funeral procession will form Wednesday 10 a.m. at the funeral home. My thoughts were with you and many nights of tears and rewrites albeit without Wild Irish Rose. You were the best of us and thanks to your sister's invasion of your privacy the most decorated. Of the draft class of "66, only eight returned to unite and celebrate. You and the Priest from Rochester at his families Susquehanna River cottage held us all together with wine and all night talk sessions, long before PTSD was known to be what we addressed. As the last of the eight, I will mourn forever the memories of our friendship and of all I served with and grieve for all we lost over there. I shall cherish the memories of friendship and families we lived to share our lives with. I lost faith in God over there, but found a faith I have kept with the eight.

To the Connors Family,

It's with great sadness that I read of Denny's passing. knew Denny at North High and after his time in Vietnam, at Cortland. He was an exceptional individual and a great wrestler too boot. Many years have passed and reading of his accomplishments did not surprise me. I remember him as a very focused individual and it's evident by the life he lead. May he Rest In Peace.

I am so glad I was able to meet Dennis two years ago while working on a biography of the sculptor George Rickey. For more than 15 years Dennis was an invaluable assistant and eventually foreman of the Rickey workshop in East Chatham, NY. I am sorry he did not live to see my book published and his loyal assistance honored in print, for the ages. He was a highly original sculptor too, in his own right.
My sincere condolences to the family,

I knew Dennis from working at JFK and GW schools since 2006. He was wonderful to work with and was truly an inspiration to his students. His artistic talent showed through in some special projects we did with "our kids". He was a great teacher and friend. I know he loved his family and especially the grands! So sorry to hear of his passing. There will be no more fun lunches to be had with Denny and friends.

Dennis was a great fellow. Our condolences to his family. May you savor the memories of all his work and efforts.
I last saw Dennis in the second of his sharing of experiences in the life of an infantry man and his company on the ground in-country in Viet Nam. His talk was detailed with rich descriptions of their daily routines in the 24/7, month-long deployments. No gory details and no descriptions of the violence experienced, although everyone knew it was in his memories. The storytelling was good for him and for many of the Viet Nam-era vets in the audience. Rest in Peace Dennis.

I knew Dennis through Wrestling. Me for Windsor and he for BNHS. I saw him a few times in our late teens and early twenties. I knew he was in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division near Pleiku. I took a hop there in mid 1968 hoping to track him down. I was naive. I only had 5 hours there and despite my best intentions I had no luck. We were both Irish and gregarious people. I missed him in my adult life. To his children and wife, you had a special person in your world. My condolences to you. I share a part of your loss.My loss is that I could never find him again. Peace be with you all.

I can't remember how long ago i met Denny ! Maybe 20 years when i bought the Twaalfskill Firehouse in the neighborhood where he & Valerie lived.
I was on his email list of people who lived in Wilbur and heard from him on many occasions when the shipyard was making too much noise at night and he couldn't sleep.
I always enjoyed seeing Denny! It was a special afternoon when i visited him at the Historic house he was renovating.
And I'll never forget that he took the time to send my son Henry books during a very difficult time. I'm glad i was able to attend one of the evening of his talks about being in Vietnam during the war. I give him a lot of credit for being strong enough to share that difficult experience.
My last encounter with Denny was very recent... he pulled over to say hello when he saw me at the firehouse... i told him i wanted to give him some honey and he reassured me that he had a neighbor bee keeper who had given him some so he was ok. He pulled away he his Prius smiling and a I assumed i would see him again soon.

I met Dennis when my wife and I moved to Kingston in 2012. From the start, he was an instant friend...calm, confidant and quick with a joke along with a lot of history about the town. We are deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Condolences to the family.
