Fred Seither Obituary

Fred S. Seither, 94, of Union Springs and formerly of Virginia Ave. in Saugerties, died January 13, 2022. Born in Germantown, OH on April 14, 1927 to the late Fred F. and Ruth Sanford Seither. Fred excelled in sports at Ithaca High School and Ithaca College. He began his teaching career in Ithaca and relocated to Saugerties where he took a position in the Athletic Dept at Saugerties High School. A successful career that spanned 27 years in coaching and sports administration as athletic director at Saugerties High School. During his coaching career, in 1961,1962 & 1963, he still holds the record of 32 consecutive wins spanning three seasons as head coach of the football team in the old DCSL League. Saugerties honored him and his predecessor, Coach William Straub, undefeated season in 1960, by dedicating and naming the football field in their honor as part of the Mum Bowl Festivities on October 5, 2013. Coach Seither at that dedication remarked “coaching football at Saugerties represented some of the best years of my life and to be remembered this way was a huge honor.” Coach Seither was elected into the Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. After his retirement, Fred and Jean moved to Union Springs, where Fred was elected to the Town Board and later served as Mayor. He is survived his children Mary Lee (Terrance) Oliver of Verona, Fred (Pamela) Seither of Elmira, Rose Ann (Charles) Hudson of Hannacroix, Cheri Lou (Henry) of Saugerties; sister in law, Rosalie Salko of Endwell; 13 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife, Jean Seither in 2010 and a great great grandson Oliver Rose. Special thanks from the family to Cindi and Chuck DeNardo for their many years of homecare for Mom and Dad, and to the staff of St. Luke’s Home in Utica, for their wonderful care and compassion towards our father. Family suggests donations in his memory be made to Alzheimer's Association or Union Springs Fire Dept., PO Box 72, Union Springs, NY 13160. A Service of Remembrance will be held 2:30 PM Saturday, June 4, 2022 at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties. Friends will be received Saturday from 1:30-2:30 PM. Expressions of condolence may be shared with the family on Coach Seither’s Tribute Wall at SeamonWilseyFuneralHome.com

Dear Fred, I'm so sorry to read about your Dad's passing. I'm sure you were extremely proud of him and he of you. I've found that the pain of loss is matched only by the joy of knowing how blessed I was to have the parents I did and the memories we shared. I hope you experience the same. God bless. Love, Kathy
