RHINEBECK- Sr. Irene Breslin, SU, died on March 15, 2015, in Rhinebeck. She was a Sister of St. Ursula for 77 years; she was also known as Sr. Mary Thomas. Sr. Irene was born in N.Y.C., the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine (Connelly) Breslin. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes School in N.Y.C. Sr. Irene entered the Society of St. Ursula in 1938, made her first vows in 1940, and pronounced her final vows in 1945. A graduate of Mount St Vincent College, she completed her MA in English at Fordham University and did advanced studies in Theology at Providence College in Providence, R.I. Sr. Irene served as teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes School in N.Y.C., the Academy of St. Ursula and Coleman High School in Kingston. She also served as principal at Notre Dame School in N.Y.C. and St Gregory the Great School in Milwaukee, Wis. Sr. Irene wrote the first English biography of Anne de Xainctonge, the foundress of the Society of St Ursula. She served for many years in Tours, France and Rome, Italy. In Rome, Sr. Irene was President of Regina Mundi College and secretary of the Union of International Superiors General. She was a member of the formation team for the young sisters in the Democratic Republic of Congo for 10 years. In retirement, Sr. Irene ministered in Rome, Italy, Wilmington and Wallace, N.C. and Rhinebeck, N.Y. In addition to her religious family, the Sisters of St. Ursula, Irene is survived by her cousins. Her brothers, Thomas and Howard predeceased her. Calling hours will be at Linwood Spiritual Center, Rhinebeck, N.Y., Wednesday, March 18, 2015, from 3 to 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Linwood Spiritual Center chapel at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Interment will be Thursday morning at 10 a.m., March 19, 2015, at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kingston. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sr. Irene may be made to the Sisters of St. Ursula or Linwood Spiritual Center at 50 Linwood Road, Rhinebeck, N.Y., 12572.
