Glenn Hornberger Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Glenn O. Hornberger announces his passing on January 12, 2023 at the age of 87 years. He was surrounded by his wife and family.

Glenn was born in Burlington VT on May 1, 1935. His parents were the late Marcella (Burdette) and Lawrence W. Hornberger. As a child, he moved several times throughout New England and he graduated HS in Houlton, ME, class of 1953, where he met his wife and several lifelong friends.

He trained at Maine Maritime Academy and graduated in '56 with a BS in Marine Engineering and a Coast Guard license and began his career in shipping in Virginia. He married Blanche (Plourde) in 1956 transferring his career on land with the Newberry Co. and later the W.T. Grant Co., which brought him to Amsterdam, NY. He became the VP of the RPM subsidiary Floquil Polly S Color Corp in '76 and then VP of Mohawk Finishing. In '80 he became the President of Mohawk, H Behlen & Bro., Westfield Coatings, Chemical Coatings and Star Finishing and was an Advisor for Label Systems. He met many wonderful colleagues, who became friends, at both W.T. Grant and later Mohawk Finishing.

Community Service was important to him and he served as a Board Member and President of several organizations including Rotary International, Montgomery United Way, St. Mary's Foundation, Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce, Montgomery Economic Development Corp. and Industries for Amsterdam. He passed this desire to give back onto his children and grandchildren.

Glenn retired in 2000 and was able to enjoy his family, travel, golf and spending time on his hobbies. He spent many family vacations on the lakes in Maine and cherished spending holidays with his family. He was proud of the family he and his wife had created. He leaves behind the love of his life, his soulmate and wife of over 66 years, Blanche (Plourde) Hornberger; his children, Sabrina (Frank) Danna, Kelley (Scott) Hawthorne, Stacy (Woody) Clark, Cindy (Steve) Kamppila, Kris (Allison) Hornberger; his grandchildren, Addison (Brittany), Garrett (Cassandra), Kendall, Lisa (Aneal), Kyle, Alex (Lindsay), Brandon (Alexandra), Jessia (Dave), Austin (Laura), Aubrey, Alaina, Rachel, Andrew (Genevieve), Olivia, Natalie; and 9 great-grandchildren. His brother Larry (Tezelia) Hornberger and his sister-in-law, Annette Lilley; and several nieces and nephews.

Glenn has requested no formal services, but a family gathering and celebration of life will occur this spring. The family has entrusted the Glenville Funeral Home and Glenn will be laid to rest at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Glenville. Online condolences www.glenvillefuneralhome.com.

Glenn was a studious classmate at Maine Maritime Academy in the class of 1956. I can recall he was close to John Allgaier and Dick Renner and I believe they came from the same Northern NY area and drove home together on weekends .
