GWENDOLYN COMAN Obituary

Gwendolyn B. Coman, 77, of Thayer Road, Amsterdam, passed away Friday evening at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility, after a brief illness. Born on August 28, 1932 in Pattersonville, NY, she was the daughter of Clarence and Alice Krutz Schmid. She was a graduate of the Woestina High School in Rotterdam Junction. Mrs. Coman attended Amsterdam Memorial Nursing School in Amsterdam where she received her training to become a registered nurse. She worked for over 40 years in both Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, where she worked in the maternity ward and intensive care units. Mrs. Coman was an active member of the Amsterdam Memorial Nursing School Alumni Association. She loved to knit, crochet and macrame. She enjoyed baking and being a homemaker. She traveled the world. Her greatest joy was being a great mom and grandmother. Her children and grandchildren were her life. She was of the Protestant faith. On July 18, 1954, she was united in marriage to James W. Coman. He passed away on October 27, 1974. Mrs. Coman is survived by her children, Christopher H. Coman, Thomas M. (Melanie) Coman, Timothy J. Coman and Jamie (Peter) Ellman; daughter-in-law, Mary Coman; sisters, Gladys Weisheit and Nancy Dykeman; brother-in-law, Fred Schram; grandchildren, Gavin, Joe, Brennagh, Connor, Rian, Merrick, Miles, Shane and Mianna; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her son, Jeffery J. Coman, on May 25, 2008; her sister, Eileen Schram; and brothers-in-law, Richard Weisheit and Floyd Dykemen. He family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place. Donations may be made in her memory to the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility or to a charity of one's choice in c/o the funeral chapel. Mrs. Coman's family would like to thank Dr. Michael Sheridan, Cheyl Sparks, Chuck and Pam Saul and the staff at the Wilkinson facility for their wonderful care and support given to her and her family.
