MARJORIE TIBBETTS Obituary

Marjorie B. Tibbetts, died Feb. 11, 2010 at The Little Flower assisted living residence in Charlotte, NC. She was 98. Marjorie was born March 31, 1911 in Rochester, NY, the daughter of Elmer and Sophie Bushnell. She graduated from Ithaca College in 1933, having majored in physical education, and was very active in women's sports. In addition, she played semi-pro basketball, competed in speed-skating and ran track in the Rochester area (1929 to 1933). Marge taught health and phys. ed. in the Sherburne Central Schools ('41 to '46), Amsterdam City Schools ('46 to '47) and Saratoga Springs High School ('47 to '66). She coached field hockey, basketball, softball, as well as a boy's bowling team. She also served as advisor for several classes at SHS and was totally devoted to her students. Marge was a member of the NYS Teachers Assoc., the Retired Teachers Assoc., The Saratoga Hospital Volunteers Guild and she also served on the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Saratoga. She was honored, along with her husband, Hutch, by the NYS Dept. of Health, Physical Education and Recreation for her lifetime contribution to her profession. For over 40 years, the "Marjorie Tibbetts Award" has been given at the annual SHS Sports Awards Ceremony. Marge was married for over 60 years to Hutch, and together they were bicycle enthusiasts who enjoyed riding in Saratoga as well as Florida. She rode until she was 88! She was preceded in death by Hutch (1996) and is survived by sons, Hutchin Tibbetts (Marian) of Niskayuna, NY and Michael Tibbetts (Rebecca) of Johnstown, NY; and her daughter, Barbara Radley (Garth) of Charlotte, NC; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. A service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 22, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 149 Lake Avenue in Saratoga Springs. A reception at the church will follow. A private burial will be at the Maplewood Cemetery (Saratoga) in May. Contributions in her name may be made to Hospice, The Salvation Army, 237 Woodlawn Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, Alzheimer's Association of NENY Chapter, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206, or a charity of your choice.

Marg was an outstanding teacher for the Saratoga Springs City School District. Her contributions to her profession and womens sports programs will be long remembered. Dr. John MacFadden, Superintendent (ret)

Mrs. T. was a person of greatness, yet reachable. She was a wonderful leader and yet a great friend. The world should have more Mr. & Mrs. Tibbetts.
