Susan Oldow Patterson Obituary

Susan Oldow Patterson, of Reading, MA, formerly of Glenville, passed away at her home on April 23, 2017 after a 2 year courageous battle with lymphoma. Susan passed peacefully with her husband and brother at her side. Born in Schenectady, July 29, 1963 she was the beloved daughter of Nancy Parker Oldow and the late Peter A. Oldow. She graduated from Burnt Hills - Ballston Lake in 1981; Smith College class of 1985 and Suffolk University Law School. Moving to Grand Rapids, MI. Susan practiced law for several years until Steven and Susan chose to move back to the bustling city of Boston. Susan became a Master Gardner of MA and soon was busy helping family and friends create gardens. Susan was president of PTO for 2 years in the new elementary school in Reading where she also created the garden in the atrium and entrance to the school. The Pattersons soon purchased a colonial home built in 1694. Susan took on the task of working with the restoration architect and builder, searching New England for the wood flooring and soapstone counter top materials. She scraped paint off the original floors so the colors could be reproduced and flattened old nails to be re-used in the construction. Nearly 2 acres of overgrown trees and brush was a lot to remove but Steve and Susan worked hard to create a "handsome house on the hill". Susan was also a volunteer at the animal shelter where she especially loved walking the dogs. Susan is survived by her devoted husband, Stephen J. Patterson, her beautiful children, Anna Parker Patterson and Samuel Wheeler Patterson. She will be greatly missed by her devoted brother, David Oldow and (sister-in-law, Krista Young) nieces, Madeleine Oldow, Emma Oldow and nephew, Peter Oldow. Susan is survived by her brother-in-law, John Patterson and nephews, Colin and John Patterson and Mattiew Patterson (sister-in-law, Annie). Susan has an Aunt Carol Covert of Glenville and two nieces, Donna Brooks and Sharon Mason. Also two grand-neices, Jennifer and Kayla Mason. A grandnephew, Keith Brooks. Susan was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Schenectady. A service will be held at their home for family and friends. Date to be announced later in May.

May God comfort you in your time of sorrow. I knew Susan since we were in the same 6th grade classroom and Girl Scouts and we met up a few times in our college years then lost touch. I've been in Ann Arbor, MI since 1985 and never knew Susan was just 2 hours away!

May peace be with you,
Mary Roche
