ANTHONY KNAPP Obituary

Anthony "Tony" Knapp, 78, of Arlington Heights, IL and Naples, FL, passed away on the 20th of January. Tony was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, whose selflessness and wry humor brought joy to all who were blessed to be around him. Born in Chicago, IL, Tony is the son of the late Frank and Anne (Mirek) Knapp, and is survived by his brother, Frank "Butch" Knapp. He grew up in Niles, Illinois and graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology as an electrical engineer. While at IIT and a class officer, he ran the first Chicago Folk Festival, where he first met one of the performers, Margaret "Peggy" Parent of Mundelein College, who became his beloved wife of 57 years. Their love and close partnership were cherished by all who know them. Tony and Peggy were blessed with 4 sons, Kevin (Kristi), Peter (Jenny), Daniel (Stacy) and David (Alison). Family was the center of Tony's world, and he was immensely proud of his 17 grandchildren, Riley, Tyler, Alexa, Ryan, Rachel, Colin, Katie, Megan, Michael, Joshua, Meredith, Caleb, Matthew, Connor, Brendan, Evangeline, and Finnegan. Tony spent his entire 35-year career at Motorola, where he retired as Senior Vice President and Corporate Controller. A lifelong learner, Tony went to night school and earned an additional MS in industrial engineering, an MBA from Loyola University and passed the CPA exam. Tony's contributions to Motorola had a profound impact on the company and included many accolades, including a feature in CFO magazine. The biggest source of pride in his professional life were the long-term relationships he made with his many Motorola colleagues over the years. After retirement, he spent 2 years as the executive director of the Motorola Foundation, Motorola's charitable arm. In his retirement years, Tony embraced the Floridian lifestyle, spending winters in Naples, Florida where he was a regular on the tennis courts, walking the beach, and serving as president of his building association for 10 years. Peggy and Tony believed in the power of education and sponsored scholarships for Early Childhood Learning at the Guadalupe Hope Center in Florida and Women in Leadership at Loyola University in Chicago. Visitation Friday, January 26, 2024, from 4:00pm until 7:00pm at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 North Arlington Heights Road (4 blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights, IL 60004 and on Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 10:00am until time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00am at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, 440 South Mitchell Avenue, Arlington Heights, Interment will be private. We have knownTony and Peggy for only a few years, but we can easily say they are one of the nicest couples we have ever met in the many years of attending CURRENT EVENTS DISCUSSION at the Senior Center. Peggy told me several times that I could get through knee replacement as she had. It was very reassuring to me as I prepared for the ordeal. What a nice person. Unfortunately, we met Tony several years later, but he a was very kind in his comments to us and he was always a gentleman. We will miss his intelligent voice in our conversations.
Our condolences to Peggy on her great loss. Bless them both.
