Bernice Roome Obituary
Bernice H. Roome of Elgin died April 28, 2025. She was born in Chicago on January 6, 1936, to Sidney and Agnes (Sobieszczyk) Shor. She graduated from Schurz High School and the University of Illinois, becoming an English teacher and retiring from Larkin High School in 1996. She was active in both St. Thomas Moore and St. Lawrence parishes and volunteered for many years with the St. Joseph Hospital auxiliary in Elgin.
She met her beloved David W. Roome in a YMCA choral group and they married in 1960. They both loved the activities of their four grandchildren, the Fighting Illini, and all Chicago sports.
She is survived by her three children, Mary (late Marlon) Godbolt Roome, David (Janice) Roome, and Jennifer (John) Thomas; four grandchildren, Anthony (Kylee) Roome, Megan (Hunter) Hinton, Sidney Thomas, and Abigail Thomas; and three great-grandchildren, Meredith Roome, David Roome, and Francesca Hinton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David; parents; and a brother and sister.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation or the V Foundation.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin, Illinois. Burial will follow at Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until the time of services at the funeral home.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Bernice. We spent many memorable moments while teaching at Abbott junior high and Larkin high school. My condolences to the family.
