Charles Smith Obituary

Charles Edward Smith of St. Charles Funeral services for Charles Edward "Bud" Smith, 79, will be held at noon Monday, at First Baptist Church of Geneva, 2300 South St., Geneva. The Rev. Roger Crites will officiate. Born Jan. 4, 1924, in Chicago, the son of Joseph and Alice (nee Oakes) Smith, he died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery, Oakbrook Terrace. Bud served in the Navy aboard the USS Tarbell during World War II. After his service in the Navy, he became a linesman for Commonwealth Edison and eventually moved into a managerial position. He was an active member of the Gideons Tri City Camp and the First Baptist Church of Geneva. Bud enjoyed his retirement years and became a licensed HAM radio operator and Kane County Emergency radio operator. He also served the local schools as a spokesman for Commonwealth Edison electrical safety education program. Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter, Barbara Ann Sharpe of Chesterfield, Mo.; granddaughter, Kimberly Ann (Rick) Nazaruk of Chesterfield; grandson, Jeffrey Wade Sharpe of Boston; and a great-grandson, Adam Charles Nazaruk of Chesterfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Shirley E. Smith (nee Boerman) on July 25, 1996. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday, at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bud's memory to The National D-Day Museum, New Orleans, 945 Magazine St., New Orleans, LA 70130; Chief Voluntary Services, Hines VA Hospital, Hines, IL 60141, for disabled veterans; or Gideons International, 2900 Lebanon Road, Nashville, TN 37214.
